Years ago I was building a game based off some lore from a war clan that was predominantly black and white with no gray and limited usage of colors. A lot of people have told me along the way that games need color in order to appeal to people, but I continue to be doubtful that that is the case.
What do you guys think? Should I keep working with a similar style or go back to the drawing board?
this is from my resort game… i know this pic has a lot more color, but the building itself can be editted to only have touches of color
games are more appealing when they are interesting and they vary.
the issues with examples shown is that they are easy to anticipate… just the same build style repeatedly throughout. try to switch up the layout and design to impress each player, as of now the layout is too bland and simple.
color isnt the issue, its the way you build… try to add more variety
um but yeah i would use color if you dont want to spend hours getting in your head about the SMALLEST detail ;-;
That looks good, but with colors, it would definitely be perfect. I like white and black, but in my opinion a bit of variety would make your game better known. P.S: It looks nice, what’s the name of your game?
I’m a bit in the middle. I love to use black and white and grey. It gives it a modern feel. I always loved the state of Oregon, and I see many modern, grey/white houses. They only look good depending on the environment. For example, if you built a city, and all of it is grey or black, it wouldn’t look nice compared to a redwood environment.
I modified a hotel room I recently bought and made it all grey for the modern look. The original room was a bright orange with some yellows which wasn’t pleasing to the eye for me. Here’s a couple images of the hotel room:
Simple and grey, but has a little color for the flooring and ceiling.
To answer your question, games need a little color, and can still be popular. Games with so much color, such as tycoons, are popular, but if the colors are simple, you may see less players playing your game. It also depends on the textures you use as well. If you use custom textures, then just the textures Roblox already has, it makes a significant difference as well. Just some advice I thought would help!
Hope you get the right answers so you can make up a conclusion!
I don’t think games need color so much as they need contrast. My belief is that contrast is what makes things pop and draws player attention to where it should be. Color palette is an added benefit that should be consistent with the theme of the game and yes that sometimes means black and white.
Your game appears to be very detailed and professional. However, the lack of colour will significantly effect the opinion of those whom player you game; for the better or for the worst.
No using color doesn’t always make a game popular. Sometimes it display your genre, or theme colors like a palate. Take the group ROBLOX Assault Team (RAT), their colors are also black and white along with their games. Evidently, it only makes their place look other more wise excellent and sci-fish.
It’s not about colour it’s about visual variety. It happens that in those screenshots there is very little visual variety in terms of colour or anything else for that matter. People point out colour because it is the easiest to spot.
When I say visual variety I mean just what I say, things that make your game visually diverse. Colour is a great way to do this but you could easily just use a grey palette.
Honestly, in my opinion it’s actually fine to keep using black, white or gray in your games.
But lovely colours such as red, pink, green… usually tend to attract the younger community, so i guess it won’t be bad if you decide to use a variety of colours other than black and white.
But in my opinion, it won’t look bad if you know how to use simple colours in certain spots to attract people, so it depends on the type of the game you’re willing to make, and if the community is gonna be able to enjoy it like how it is.
In my opinion, I do like the monochrome as it is one of my favorite styles. Though if you wish for your game to be popular, you have to consider the fact that Roblox comprises mostly of 5-11 year olds. You may attract some parts of Roblox’s vast community though you have to bare this in mind.
It really depends on what kind of game you are making. If you want something that is meant to be fun and appeal to a younger audience then I recommend using more color. If it’s something that is meant to be more dark and gloomy then you can use less color. Ultimately it depends on the style your trying to achieve.
Games don’t need colour to be popular, heck, you could even make a game in complete grayscale.
What’s more important is the way you build it. Colours do not matter because some things are literally not meant to have colour!
For example, if you were trying to make a historic game then a lack of colour would be completely understandable and justified. It might even make said game even more popular because of the added effect.
In a nutshell, as long as you make quality builds, colour doesn’t necessarily matter.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, I did my best.
Colors are a major part of your perspective of a game, artwork, or really anything else that you see. When your build is compromised of only grays, there really isn’t anything to feel about that build.
The game icon is one of the single biggest factors that will contribute to your player count. An icon that looks like the screen shots you provided will blend right into the greyish background of the site, and will likely harm your player count significantly.
The game itself doesn’t have to be really colorful, but having contrast will help a lot. For example Innovation Inc games have a predominantly greyscale color palette, but contrasted with bright orange and blue highlights.
At the end of the day, your largest audience on roblox is fairly young kids, and they tend to prefer games with bright, friendly colours, so it’s still probably a good idea to use a more varied color pallette, even if its only one factor of many.
This might be just an opinion but I feel as though it would be best to have a few more colors in this case. Having use the same exact shade of white/tint in every single part doesnt make it pop out that much and seems bland and boring, adding a little shading/tinting such as making it brighter can have a huge difference in how it looks such as the walls/floor in the 2nd picture.
Its ok if you want to stay with the theme of black/white but you should also consider changing between different shades to contrast some parts easier than others. (Example would be using grey on the floors a little/furniture/etc)
