Do you all think I should stop building my city and instead focus on building a simpler one?

Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to read my post. May you all offer your insights on whether or not you think my game has too many parts to be worth attempting to reduce? My game is currently pushing around 55K parts (the difference between this and the part count in my screenshots comes from a few buildings placed outside the block which I would eventually remove) and I’m unsure if it would be a better option for me to build something simpler from scratch. I intended for this game to be a Greek-themed roleplaying game in a similar vein to the older “Welcome to the Town/City of Robloxia” and “The Complex” games.

When I began constructing this map around two or three years ago, I hoped to achieve a comfortable middle ground between lesser detailed roleplaying games and intricately crafted maps which were too resource-intensive to foster much of a community. I do not intend to disrespect the developers of either of these two categories; these were my observations as of a few years ago and I understand that each building style has its own pros and cons. Now, I believe my map to be too detailed to run smoothly on an average user’s device and not detailed enough to match the qualities of the showcases which initially inspired me. While my game now has two buildings containing player-ownable apartments (for a total of six units), I am concerned that I have long passed the point where I may make additions to the game without compromising its playability, from a resource availability perspective; I cannot imagine that there are many players clamoring to play a half-finished game that seems ready to burst at its seems. With all of this being said, I request your opinions as to whether or not you think I should halt development versus attempting to further reduce part count. I understand that the decision ultimately lies with me but I feel too invested in this map to make an unbiased decision. I appreciate any and all responses.

Also, please pardon the free model fruit cart - I left that asset as a placeholder in case I decided to build a custom fruit cart in its place.

This is a very interesting topic to me because I’ve run into the same roadblock. The only solution I’ve come up with so far is to develop my own parts system (a group of about 12 shapes) and split detailed interiors into secondary places. The part system gives me more shapes to build with while still taking advantage of instancing. I can create a fairly large “lobby” made up of exterior buildings and a few interiors. You can do quite a bit in the lobby and when you enter a building you transfer to place B with the interior. The advantage is you can make large and detailed interiors. The disadvantage is chat becomes local and more scripting is needed. There may be other problems I’m unaware of so far.

Thank you for this idea, I completely forget that such a technique was possible in roblox! For clarification, are you describing teleporting users who enter buildings into a separate place containing only interiors or are you describing only loading the interiors for players who enter inside of them (similar to meepcity).

I’m referring to teleporting. I wasn’t aware of another load option. The thing I worry about is setting up a whole new internal system that might suddenly break because of a platform update. The techniques I’m using are built in to Roblox. If the interior is a new place, it gives you the option to get very detailed and/or build large structures. As for the exterior, you can build a simpler exterior that resembles the interior to a point. I got the idea from Movies/TV. Often the exterior only kind of resembles the interior.

Edit: Also 55,000 parts is getting very close to high performance. It will take some very well thought out engineering on your end to make your idea work. The concept can work though.

Thank you for clarifying, I appreciate your insight!

This topic is hard to understand, so lemme try.

So, if you are good dev you shouldn’t quit. If executed properly could go good.

So, if you are bad dev you should go simple. If executed properly could go pretty nice.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: POPULARITY EXECUTE

VERY long answer: 55k parts is alot and will crash on low end computers, solution is to make low end ver with less parts

Short answer 2: No

long answer 2: No Popularity good execute few players

Technically you could use a the same chat for the game you left and the interior game. But it would require a lot of work and probably exceed the maximum amount of server requests.
