Do you guys prefer fewer enemies that are stronger, or many enemies who individually are weaker?

Hey guys! This might be considered as discussion, but I’m not just asking it to bring up a discussion. I’m using your opinions more to formulate how I want my game to be carried out.

Essentially, I have been working on this game called Pandemic Phase (Yes I know, horrible timing, but development on the original game started mid-January) and it is essentially a Waves-Based Shooter. My main dilemma so far in terms of game design is: Do I want a bunch of easy Zombies, or a more moderate amount of more difficult Zombies? I personally couldn’t reach a conclusion so I’m coming here to ask you guys, which one would be the better option?

  • A large amount of easy zombies
  • A fair sized amount of more diffiucult zombies.

If it’s wave based, why not make some levels many easy zombies and other levels fewer difficult zombies?
If it’s all the same then it’s liable to get a little monotonous.

Definitely a large amount of enemies with little health, killing more enemies, despite the health, will make me feel like a boss :sunglasses:

I’d say a large amount of enemies that are weak as it would be easier to attack and defeat them all at once.
However, if it is wave based then I recommend having them increase, grow, or change.

Regardless of which of these options I pick, they do gradually get harder. Not to mention there will be a boss every 5 waves. But I will definitely try to spice it up more!

The zombies do gradually get harder, and there is +1 every consecutive wave regardless of which of these options I choose (i.e. Wave 1 has 8 zombies, Wave 2 has 9, etc.)

What would be cool is if higher waves included more difficult zombies but lower waves have less or none.

That’s the plan. The zombies get more difficult as the waves progress, there is also more of them. For instance:

Wave 1 has 8 zombies, each zombies has 40 health.

Wave 10 has 18 zombies, each zombies has 160 health.

True. That’s why a lot of people love doom.

Also on the contrary, there are more difficult enemies in DOOM which take longer to kill. I think having a variety, some fodder enemies that can be mowed down easily and some more powerful enemies which are more satisfying to kill is a very good idea.
Just having the same enemy over and over again is boring and will quickly get tiring.

That’s a little bit of my plan.
As waves progress, there is an increasingly larger chance that different types of zombies can spawn. I can also set how many ‘slots’ they take up (so if wave 10 has 18 zombies, and a zombie that takes up 2 slots spawns, then the number is down to 16 zombies left to spawn, as opposed to 17). There’s also mini-bosses after every 5 rounds coming soon, and there’s a major boss on Wave 13.
