Hello. I recently decided to make a city game, where players could choose a number of different roles to play as, such as Taxi driver, Bus driver, Police, Fire department etc.
After a few hours of development, I thought that maybe players may feel like my game could be trying to copy something like the ‘Neighbourhood of Robloxia’ or ‘Rocitizens’. (Which I’m not intending to do).
My building style is pretty different to both games, however it has a cartoony style.
I am not sure whether to continue my project or would it just be seen as a copy? Just wanted some opinions on this.
I don’t think your game will seem like a copy.
Especially since you have a different building style, and teams.
As long as you continue to add things that are different from the others it will be okay. I personally like how players can be taxi drivers, and firefighters which a lot of games don’t have options like that.
You can make a similar game that isn’t considered copying.
Perhaps they don’t, but it’s not a major selling point. Plus, Ultimate Driving has these jobs and that game is considered more popular. As long as you have a unique selling point that can direct people to your game opposed to your competitors, you should be fine.
An example of a good game that has its similarities: Bloxburg and The Sims. Very similar, but Bloxburg has its own USPs and features that makes it one of the most popular games on Roblox.
That sounds like State of Firestone and State of Mayflower (roleplay communities) where you are a citizen and you may take up on occupations (e.g., police officer, lawyer) or even start your own business. Don’t let their low concurrent player count fool you. Roleplay communities generally have lower concurrent counts than games. They are already big in the genre and are tough competitors so if you’re set about creating a community like what you just mentioned, be sure to check their communities out to see how you can be different and unique.
Thanks, but those games you suggested are usually pretty realistically built, however mine is a lot more “cartoon-like”.
So I think my game targets a lot wider audience as younger players don’t like the realistic games as much.
