Okay, so I recently made a system where I could choose to turn off the Roblox Chat Filter, for a microphone. This is only done under special circumstances, and mid an event at a place I created… which there was no advertising off of the Roblox Platform, we were hit with this. I’ve seen this happen on multiple occassions and I’m unsure as to why. The only change made between this place and our other places is this chat filter bypass update.
If you’re wondering why I made a system that would allow me to bypass the chat filter, there are times where you can’t say anything… even Hello world without it being censored. This creates difficulties when you’re trying to talk to an audience about the show and the first thing shown on the message is #######################
Even if the intent wasn’t malicious, manually disabling the filter, whether it’s for a mic system or an internal event, is still a breach. Roblox moderation systems can’t assume good faith; all they see is that a platform-wide safeguard was removed.
And to be clear: you shouldn’t bypass any Roblox moderation systems. That includes chat filters, security prompts, or anything else that exists to protect users. Once you start creating exceptions on your own, you’re stepping into territory Roblox has zero tolerance for regardless of how contained the use case is.
Also, the title using “JHW Presents” probably added to the suspicion. “Presents” is commonly used in off-platform promotions, so pairing that with an unfiltered comms system can easily be interpreted as directing users off-platform, even if that’s not what actually happened.
You’re safest building on top of the default systems (not around or through them). Best move going forward is to keep the default chat system untouched and try alternatives like preset UI messages.
You can still file an appeal and explain exactly what the system did, while clarifying there was no off-site promotion.
To clarify; the filter is enabled by default and I only disable it when absolutely neccessary. I digress, I understand why you’d say this… however it has become nearly impossible to talk on Roblox due to their poor Chat Filter System. If their chat filter system wasn’t as awful as it is, I wouldn’t of created the bypass in the first place. There are times, I can not communicate with my friends on this site to a point where I have to message them on external platforms to talk to them while we’re trying to talk on Roblox. If Roblox can not make a coherent Chat Filter System, then they need to remove the chat itself, or the filter itself.
Thank you for this insight, I’ve went ahead and removed the JHW Presents… however I find the rule idiotic to have the word “Presents” be what is classified as promoting something off-site. I present my buildings on Roblox that I create. Does that mean that I, myself, am directing users off-platform to my Roblox Profile or Roblox Community? It’s absurd and misconstrudes the idea of the word “Present”.
Thank you for the insight you’ve given me, I’m very cautious with how I deal with filtering, and don’t turn off said filter unless absolutely neccessary.
You’re absolutely not wrong. The filter can be a pain, especially when you’re just trying to run something legit and Roblox ends up censoring half your message. That said, I think the real issue is how we approach stuff like this. It’s easy to try and find workarounds or break the system when it gets in the way, but this time it was chat filtering, next time it might be something else you disagree with. If every time that happens the solution is to bypass, you’re just setting yourself up for more moderation.
Instead of trying to fight the system directly, it’s way more sustainable to think about how to work around it creatively. Like yeah, the filter sucks sometimes, so how can you still communicate your event clearly using the tools you’re given?
That mindset goes a long way and not just on Roblox, but in development in general. Learning how to work within limitations instead of always trying to break past them sets you up for success long-term. It’s still good to voice issues like this. You’re definitely not alone in being frustrated with the filter. But moderation has always been one of those areas where Roblox struggles to find a middle ground that’s both safe and creator-friendly.
The goal should be finding ways to make it work within the platform, because that’s what actually keeps your place up and running without stress.
And to be real, it looks like moderation only flagged that one asset, so it’s not like your whole account was wiped. It’s more of a precautionary strike because of how “Directing Users Off-Platform” looked on their end. But since you mentioned the filter bypass system, it makes sense to talk about it now before it becomes a bigger issue.
