Dopamine Rushing

I want to make a player feel aroused, amazed, great for killing other players (making them stay longer ingame), how would I achieve that properly? A simple “you killed” text and one sound effect isn’t gonna cut it.

Option1: Try rewarding the player with a low amount of cash/items
Option2: Add kill effect

There are many ways to do this, and the affect varies from player to player, but here are a few methods that generally tend to work on most people:

  • Visual Stimuli. Anything that feels rewarding, such as saturated colors or even a simple sparkle effect could do it. Other things include impactful (death) animations or even just a simple camera shake, or else it could feel a bit too “static.”

  • Audial Stimuli. This can be anything from a simple chime sound effect to even a grunt or music. Blades slashes and perfectly timed sound effects work great too, silence always makes the player feel uneasy or simply just bored.

  • Progression/Rewards. Offering rewards such as EXP or rare weapons is great. Implementing exclusive events, quests, etc. works as well. Anything to help the player do something else that isn’t repetitive (a bad idea for quests would be: kill 2 thugs, then kill 4, kill 8, and so on…). It should help them progress in the game rather than just for levels.

Now we move on to the move extreme section, which includes these same principles but on a more extreme scale:

  • For the visual stimuli, you could add some gore or dismemberment, even mutilation (not too sure about this stuff). You can add flashes of light, environmental destruction, UI effects to make it seem like the player is having a sort of adrenaline surge, no matter how subtle it may be. The list goes on, but I think I’ll stop there.

  • For the audial stimuli, you can create sound effects of blood splatters, the weapon destroying and ripping apart their body, or even screams. Tense music could work here too, as well as distorted music.

(most of these suggestions may seem a bit maniacal, but they all output some sort of dopamine rush.)

Hope you found at least some of these suggestions helpful, good luck!

(I'm not suggesting to implement any of these in your game if they're against TOS, you should research before adding the "extreme" ones.)

There’s a horde of FPS games out there to draw inspiration from, both on and off Roblox. Check them out and see how they achieve these things.

That’s what I am doing right now.

I already have these, though I am revamping it, because my old vfx is old. I am also adding hyping elements.

Well, if you already have those, here are a few additions:

  • Acrobatic finishers or moves

  • Exaggerated particle effects (i.e, blood, slash, wind, etc.)

  • Cinematic field of view or cool camera angles

  • Bone cracks, squelches, footsteps, sharp blade (or whichever weapons is used) sounds

  • Intensify certain sound effects or music when, for example, the enemy is hit
