not sure how to feel about this update after getting use to the hotkeys for Shift being for snapping instead of alt. I feel like it was way more intuitive to use than what it was updated to.
Could there be a possibility this can be changed or have an option for either?
I really liked having snap to parts be a hotkey, now I have to go back and forth between modeling and clicking the button for snapping. Any chance this could be something the user could customize or add another hotkey somewhere for this? Otherwise I’m loving this system.
The snaps to dots are good addition but only when you’re building on a cardinal direction with grid affirming parts otherwise you’d be snapping into random sections and suddenly your uniform .5 Stud build has a .25 or even a .125 offset.
Holding Left Alt also outright disables the traditional Snap to grid making the whole system extremely janky and difficult to use.
I liked how disable snapping was using shift key instead of alt, it messed up my workflow and it does not feel natural having to press alt to enable/disable snapping — most of the developers including me probably use snap to key more and it’s more accessible for me to press shift than alt all the time (coming from a macbook user).
It’s now a separately toggleable option: If you look in the snapping section of the ribbon bar there’s “Snap to Parts” and the old snap to grid. You can choose whether to include the edge snapping or not depending on the situation by using that new checkbox.
I had each of them toggled to true in that gif and it still ignored my grid when edge snapping, whereas previously I’m pretty certain it used to follow both simultaneously, not one or the other. Edge snapping should respect the grid if both are enabled.
Oh, I see what you mean: Currently I set it up where it either entirely soft snaps or entirely grid snaps, open to changing this.
How would you expect the visualization to look when soft snapping on one axis but grid snapping on the other? In that if it soft snaps to the center-line, that centerline may not align with a grid snap. I could show the entire grid snap visualization even if it’s actually aligned to the centerline and not a grid snap to avoid flicker at the cost of it being harder to see when you’re aligned with the centerline.
If I’m soft snapped to something like an edge or a centerline, all I’d really need are for the grid visualization on the remaining axis I’m sliding on to come back, like so:
Sorry to butt in, but if anything were to be changed with this system, I would love to see an option to change the controls and functionalities to the update prior to this one, since alot of people are really used to the old system, and personally it’s really damaged my workflow since this new one feels really weak and hard to work with. I just love how I could just hold shift to click every part together and have a good way of going between different snap modes without it being the default, it’s a real pain having to hold down a button just to move things normally.
The Snap system went from top tier tool to good tool.
Simplifying by adding a checkbox and putting alt was the worst mistake to make.
Personally my fingers are not comfortable holding alt and alt gr on the keyboard. And holding left click for that makes the tool slow to use.
Shift was and remains the best option to manage these things.
Since all this has changed, I have video evidence that it has become more difficult to Snap because it is more disrupted by other parts than before…
I really wish I could put shift back in place of alt. I hope this will be editable in the Studio settings in an upcoming update.
Imagine moving around Studio :
Snap with shift Vs Snap with alt
I figured it out. It seems that having the studio tweaks plugin enabled causes this to happen. Otherwise everything else is just fine. 2024-05-14+17-06-24_out.wmv (1.8 MB)
Hey, I just wanted to get a quick poll of people who’ve worked with the beta about snapping since we’re a unsure which way to proceed with the snapping. Do you think you would like the new snapping (separate “Snap to Parts” toggle) or old snapping (key toggles between snapping modes) better long term?
New beta snapping (with separate Snap to Parts checkbox)
Old beta snapping (with key toggling between modes)
No strong preference
I don’t know what you’re asking about

Any other feedback about how you would ideally like snapping to work welcome.
