Dynamic Skies Are Getting Cloudy

I’m sure that was intentional because clouds now affect the graphics slider. And I think it shouldn’t be like this. It doesn’t do this on 4 bars.

This is honestly embarrassing. People were waiting for this feature for so long, and when it finally comes into Beta it’s a slightly transparent PNG stacked on top of slightly different slightly transparent PNGs? There is no randomness, and the two settings we’re given access to just decreases the overall transparency of the cloud images so the darker spots appear lighter and the lighter spots disappear.

I understand that this is a Beta feature, but these clouds are not volumetric at all - they’re literally just PNGs. You can even see the texture tiling here.

These skies aren’t dynamic, and they look like something that would fit into Roblox in 2012. I sure hope that the next phase will actually deliver as expected.

Yeah I was going through the files to find some icons I could use for a UI and they actually have a cloud heightmap in there.

Aren’t actual volumetrics like pretty performance demanding?
I’m pretty sure high resolution volumetrics require quite some resources (I’ve used and seen them in Blender and Unity, definitely not potato PC stuff).

I mean, if stacked PNGs can make the game look volumetric then that’s pretty cool.
Although it does feel a little misleading to call it “volumetric dynamic skies” then.

I’m not complaining about this feature just found it odd why they call it “volumetric”, wouldn’t a different name fit better?

I assume there pretty new to this type of stuff so there experimenting with it quite a bit. They do have to make it optimized with all devices. This is phase 1 after all so I assume we can expect more out of phase 2 and 3.

Ye I think so as well, I’ve noticed a lot of suggestions and a lot of options not being there yet so this is probably an experiemental phase.

It looks decent if you fine tune it for whatever game you use it for.
I was surprised when I noticed that it moves (I probably skipped over a few lines of text when they mentioned it was “dynamic”).

Ngl, clouds do remind me a little of the moldy krabby patty under the grill episode of Spongebob, they looks so grey, a bit flat and round around the edges.

Not to make fun of this neat feature, it just reminded me because of how the clouds look, looking forward to what’s coming next.

If they were going to use PNGs, they could at least make it random and give the clouds depth beyond just the same exact PNG stacked on top of the other. Plus, using PNGs in this method means that unless you want to make your clouds really small, the clouds will be extremely dark. Overall, it’s just a stupid way to do it - using volumetrics or not.

It’s still in the first phase. There’s more coming in later phases

This took them over a year to actually roll out, and the first phase is a PNG plastered onto the air. That doesn’t make me very optimistic about the other phases.

At the same time, they could of wanted to roll out all the other phases and not split it up but couldn’t and wanted us for something to at least test from all the delays we’ve had. So I guess they might of resorted to this as a compromise.

Alright, the stuff’s really cool, but the thing is that, I can’t use it. I’ve restarted Studio, Opted In & Out multiple times & even uninstalled, then re-installed the latest version of Studio & tried some other common fixes, yet I can’t see an option to insert clouds. Can anyone explain me why?

If you have not done so already, you should go to File in your Roblox game and then click “Beta Features.” Then scroll down until you find clouds/dynamic skies and select it. You may have to restart your place for it to be functional.

I may have left a step out as I currently do not have Studio open, but it should work.

Well, I’ve already did it & I did it once again, right now.

It’s not working, like all of my previous attempts for the past 5 days.

Have you been enrolled in the Beta Program?

You don’t have to be enrolled in the beta program to access the clouds, @CrezyT just turn on roblox studio beta features, select everything, search for clouds in literally anything, could be lighting, workspace, or even starterplayer! Then press the arrow on the right side top corner of the search bar and uncheck “show only recommended items”

I’m wonder if we getting more options properties something like this beside Cover and Density.

Those may come during Phase 2 and 3.
Phase 0 - 1 will be limited.

Yeah, I found it! Thanks for the help!

friend have you noticed that the chat is dead lol

Yeah it’s pretty dead, we’ve all seen the phase 1 and since it looks crappy I guess nobody cares anymore lol.
