Dynamic Skies Are Getting Cloudy

Technically speaking yes, the clouds are moving with the camera since they are still in Phase 1 we actually can’t go through the clouds.

And for the black line I’m assuming that a rendering issue. Not something I really know much about but I was experiencing that issue a few weeks ago when I was doing testing of my own.

I want to make sure, will clouds get a height option so we could put clouds lower than usually it is? I really want to recreate this one ability from a show I watched and the current height of clouds doesn’t allow me to do it sadly.

Is been a long time, is this still planed to be added in game? Seems to work fine.

Since the clouds already run great on my 1.1 ghz intel celeron, there would be no reason to move to 2d clouds.

I will be giving a guess on what each phase will be… Judging by the words of Roblox Engineers, and the most requested features.

Phase 1b will only have a change in performance, and bugs will be resolved. You wont be able to fly through clouds just yet though…

Phase 1c will have much more of a cloud shape. Much more randomness! Some clouds big, some higher, some short, some soft, ect.

Who knows what phase 2 and 3 will offer!

If you use a nice skybox and the atmosphere object they can look very nice.
If you don’t use the atmosphere object clouds look very weird and in my case have a visible outline:

Using the atmosphere object helps a little bit, but the white outlines still remain:

It sure does look nice, but due to the outlines and them being just some noise images stacked over, I won’t be using them, but I think this early implementation looks somewhat nice.

The Clouds is already released as a beta feature. and Roblox staff silently stopped working on it. we don’t know when will there be a new update or new phase. or even a announcement for it.

I know they released it but it sucks that its been worked on for a long time yet useless updates are more important than fun updates for developers :slight_smile:

My Opinion:

A skybox with atmosphere will somewhat reduce the weird looking clouds. Waiting for more properties to be added to it, like width, height, shaping etc.

Hmm, seems like clouds right now are always dark, can’t find a way to make it completely white.

These Dynamic Skies Phases Update are important. Why is Roblox not working on this anymore after the beta feature of clouds phase 1? At least we have phase 1 of the beta feature, I miss Dynamic Skies. :pensive:

They are, it’s just difficult I assume because they’ve delayed it so much.


On the very right it says it was updated sometime in april, which is the same with all the other features. They wouldn’t really just stop working on a feature. Especially one as big as this.

I tried out dynamic skies for Super Stela Games 2 and it looks really nice for the tutorial stage of the game!

I see glitches like a bright horizontal line when it’s supposed to be dark like this:

There are improvements that can be done like changing the cloud color, changing the cloud speed, and use your own cloud images for games with varying art styles.

I wanted to change the cloud color to colors other than white and black like blue and bright purple to better fit the theme for the realm and change the cloud speed to be faster, not slow because the realm takes place at outer space but with floating skies with natural habitats instead of plants.

I’m so excited and I can’t wait until this feature goes out of beta and it releases.

Yep, placing clouds on an engine like this is not easy. It’s possible, but it takes long.

We should give the developers working on this the time they need.

No. The clouds aren’t good enough to come out of beta because they’re really basic and they still have a handful of bugs and issues that need to be ironed out before release. Not to mention there’s 3 phases that Roblox is planning to work on and attempting to release them by the middle of 2021 wouldn’t be a smart idea since the staff on Roblox are spread thin working on all these new updates, and they have to be optimized and polished within the restrictions of the Roblox engine.

It’s been months since clouds were first released, and it still looks like noise textures with horrible alpha blending stacked atop each other. I mean, Sebastian Lague did it himself in about a week and it already looks better than the mess we have now!
