I wanted to share a frustrating experience regarding my game Liar’s Game, which was recently moderated and deleted by Roblox. The reason cited was that it allegedly violated the Suicide and Self-Harm community standard.
Here’s the exact message I received from Roblox:
The following content is no longer available on Roblox because it violates our Community Standards. These standards outline expectations to ensure that everyone on Roblox feels welcome and safe and is treated with respect.
• Content: Liar’s Game , assetId: 91712153190994
• Related Community Standard: Suicide and Self Harm
Violation of Community Standards may result in action being taken on your Roblox account. If you believe this content decision was in error; you can contact us.
While I fully support Roblox’s commitment to safety, this decision is simply incorrect. Liar’s Game does NOT include content related to suicide or self-harm.
The game is inspired by Liar’s Bar, a popular card game on Steam that contains suicide themes. However, my team and I—fully aware of Roblox’s rules—carefully reworked these elements to ensure compliance. We replaced those themes with mechanics like players shooting other players, which is common in Roblox shooter games.
We’ve already sent an appeal, but I fear this will go unheard. Moderation inconsistencies like this hurt us as developers who strive to create innovative and compliant content for the platform.
Have any of you encountered similar issues with false moderation? How do you handle these situations? I’d appreciate your insights and suggestions!
Let’s hope for better clarity and fairness in moderation.
I think it would be helpful to send a screenshot of the moderation message and a picture of the asset you have been moderated for. I agree with Bura in that you should reach out to Roblox Support either via email or the website.
One morning I woke up to find out one of my games was content deleted unknowingly. It was a Buckshot Roulette clone, game very widely copy & pasted into the Roblox gamepage, however none other game except mine had been banned… I decided to contact support and the reason of this deletion was Suicide and self harm (as expected, but I was still a bit mad that mine was the only buckshot game banned!), until I contacted them again, and the actual ban reason was that I had to stupidily copy the 1:1 description from the original game on itch. io to my game, which contained the 2 killing words “Russian Roulette” in it.
Roblox moderation is very delicate over this type of stuff (as my profile description has been banned multiple times for just putting my discord @ tag in it without even saying a single word of what it was), haven’t you had anything in the name or description that couldve possibly affected the deletion of your game?
And well, if you haven’t, I know for a fact we are all devs tryna import suicide related games into roblox with the exact same mechanics, but the notorious twist of replacing the actual suicide content ingeniously by some or other way around, trying to abide to the Roblox ToS, which out of any minimal mistake, or possibly bad luck, could’ve gotten your game content deleted by a Roblox administrator.
They mentioned that the game contains “Suicide and Self Harm” even though it doesn’t. Our game is inspired by another game that actually contains those stuff but we changed it to be like this:
Something very similar happened to another developer.
Change the icon and the thumbnail to Roblox’s default icon and thumbnail, then contact Roblox Support under “I was wrongly moderated for other content I created” saying that your game does not include any type of suicide or self-harm. They should reopen the game.
This is how the other developer got their game reopened. They had almost exactly the same icon and thumbnail, and got their game taken down for the exact same reason.
Update:
They replied saying “Your experience has been identified as unsuitable for the age group for which it is currently accessible”. The experience received a Suspension for violating the Roblox Community Standards: -Violent Content and Gore."
This is absolutely incorrect. we correctly set the rating of the game (Including Blood (Realistic/Light)) and the rating was set to Moderate. but I assume that when the game got deleted, the rating was reset.
Now I have to wait another 3/4 days to get a reply…
They’re not giving any proofs or valid reasoning, why can’t they tell us exactly what’s the issue so we can fix it? this is honestly stupid.
We’re spending hours of work and savings on these projects just for us to get hit by this wrongfully? it’s about time to get lawyered up in my opinion… this is simply unfair.
Roblox moderation is a joke, don’t even bother. Try contacting an admin or active staff on the forum instead. Moderation has been nothing but a pain for developers, I’m surprised there isn’t a dedicated team for developers with games with certain play stats etc. instead we all go through the same terrible moderation that the rest of the website goes through.
