Feature Requests category needs a revamp for applications

Hello!

TL;DR

current system to apply for feature Requests bad (imo), new system please. people who say “this belongs to [xyz]” when u dont have a choice is annoying. see below to my suggestion for it. asking for discussion. thank you.

I know this was most likely discussed before; however, I’d like to make a few points that I observed with this issue.

Just to preface, I understand why it has been locked. However, locking them completely behind a (seemingly) manual application-based process shouldn’t be the conclusion.

Here’s my issue with the current system:

It’s an application process, and it’s slow.

There have been many instances where I or other people have found features that could be useful, but do not have access to these categories. So they go to apply… I’m still waiting on the Feature Request one I applied for around 3-4 months ago. By then, unless you don’t note what you have to say, you’d forget what you wanted to share, if they would even let you in.

“This belongs to the feature request board”

Yes. I get it. Certain posts on the now-called Roblox Discussion or Creating on Roblox should be on the Feature Requests tab, but you cannot do anything about it. I find so many people who say that when they know fully well that the author doesn’t necessarily have a choice. They can report to a person who has access or the staff, but that is highly inefficient, and I imagine some people are still unfamiliar with who these people are.

Also, if I ever gained access, it’s not that I’d mind posting things for someone, but why would anyone have to talk to me first and post it for them instead of doing it directly? I would find it annoying to be told ‘this belongs to XYZ’ when I don’t have an option.

My own suggestion

I completely sympathise with the fact that back then, there were probably a lot of posts incorrectly posted on those categories. I don’t suggest that they should be completely opened back up again. However, instead of it being a (seemingly) manual application-based process, it should be a criterion that is automatically processed. That criterion is up for discussion; I am not the one for it. I would maybe recommend the following:

  • Must have been on DevForum for a year
  • Have good standing with the community
  • 1k Favourites received

This is just an example; I’m sure there’s better than that.

What are your thoughts on this?

(No, this is not a Feature Request in itself; it’s meant to induce discussion. However, if you have access to it, and you like the idea… be my guest. )

and, well, the sheer number of bumbling idiots who would open duplicate or trash threads

That’s an unfortunate reality, yes; however, don’t you think that there should be an overhaul in gaining access to these categories?

The current approach is a band-aid solution (I haven’t checked recently, but I’m still certain it’s locked behind an unreachable forum rank). It could easily be gated by profile stats like you mentioned. It would, in theory, bar genuine-but-inactive people from opening threads, but with more people with access, it can be done on their behalf

True. I think it’s no longer necessary to be a Regular to gain access. I am pretty sure now you just go on the feature requests group page thing and request access, stating why you think you should have access.

I would expect that people would go for people who are known to have access to submit their ideas; however, as I previously mentioned, that shouldn’t have to happen because of ‘bad actors’ to put it that way. A criterion should be accessible but moderately challenging to achieve, which goes for everyone.

Because roblox employees would see 100 feature requests and hour

That’s understandable, hence why I mentioned a new system should be set in place.

Whaaat? It’s not slow! Look at how fast I was accepted into it! I barely needed to wait! Only a 2 whole months!

I have access to both feature requests and bug reports, so idk if the rank thing is still an issue.

Regular Isn’t A Rank Anymore And Everyone Has Access To Bug Reports Now So Idk Why This Post Makes It Seem Like Nobody Can Use It, The Only One That Is Request Only Is Feature Requests And It Just Takes A Really Long Time To Get Access To It

Bug reports are still an application-based process to enter, at least that’s how I got access to it, unless it opened up now (which I doubt, but may be incorrect).

the above statement is incorrect, as pointed out by users.

Uhh No It Isn’t It Hasn’t Been Apply Only For Ages Now, There’s Literally A Giant Button That You Click That Allows You To Create A Bug Report

Nope! Hasn’t been like this for awhile actually, just click “Report Bug” and you’ll be able to make a bug report.

Ah okay, good to know! i’m glad that’s solved! I guess that only leaves Feature Requests. thanks for letting me know!

I don’t know how they choose who to accept. I recently got accepted. Either way, they just don’t look at Feature Requests…

Lucky, I submitted mine in April 2024 and it took one and a half years

when a moderator says “put this in feature requests” the moderator should just move it themselves, incase the OP doesn’t have access

It’s not really the moderators (usually though I wouldn’t be surprised if it does happen), it’s the average users. I find it so exhausting when I see comments saying that, like what do you want them to do? I guess it grinds my gears a little. It’s not that they’re incorrect, it’s just that they know very well why it was sent in the incorrect one to begin with.

they can let people flag the post and say “move this to feature requests”
