[Feedback] Cartoon-Style Medieval House

Hello, my name is Extorx! (My longest and hardest build)

I don’t focus a lot on building houses, and I definitely don’t focus on building anything Medieval related.
So, this was my first time attempting a Medieval type build. This was my longest and hardest build since I’ve been building in Roblox Studio.

I normally build with a cartoon-ish style 95% of the time, as I have trouble selecting materials and/or textures for my builds. This build was built completely in Roblox Studio. I thought about making a duplicate and adding materials and/or textures, but it’d take a lot longer and I don’t have a lot of experience with it.

I also have ZERO experience with lighting/skyboxes, but, I tried my best to do so.

Parts used - Around 4500-5000 (Because of details)

Total Build Time - 5 days or about 22 hours

| Please feel free to leave feedback on it! |

Thank you!

Looks really good!

Tbh this could look like some realistic build if you switched to custom textures and baked in a few shadows + add shadowmap

If you want a good skybox; https://www.roblox.com/library/509385280/Bright-Above-the-Clouds-Skybox This one could work really well if you tinkered with your lighting settings a bit

Thank you! But, I dislike using materials and/or textures. I’m more of a low-poly builder. And yes, I forgot to add the Shadowmap style. And, thanks for the skybox.

This medieval build looks pretty good to be added in a village - town map. A detailed, low-poly medieval build. As the building is well put together like the tile roof pattern it makes the build stand out however since your having problems with the lighting.

I’ll play with the different objects you can insert into lighting, such as, Ambient, Brightness, ect. You should play with the brightness in the lighting tab: You could also play with the other settings in there to get the theme your trying to achieve. Those are just some ideas you could possibly add to building to have the colors stand out.

Try adding a bit of decorations and changing things up a bit you should add some wall lights by the door, wooden tables, baskets, or tools. I do see a lot of low-poly builds often feature bright vibrant colors, consider playing with the lighting settings that could improve the overall feel.

Overall, very well done!

Thank you! I appreciate your feedback. Lighting is definitely NOT my strong suit, so thank you for the advice! I’ll definitely mess around with the lighting once I get the chance.

Did you take inspiration from the roblox subreddit? The Building concept looks extremly familiar to a post from there.

I’m sort of lost on why you think it’s low poly if you have 4500-5000 parts

assuming each part contains 6 polygons then your build is around 27000 polygons.
Aside from the extremely large polygon count I’d say that you should add some terrain to the area around it so it looks less of a flat plane and more like ground

Low-poly as in, I don’t use materials or textures.

No, I don’t even use reddit. I use reference images from Google.

People would pay quite a lot for that! GOOD JOB! I love how it’s detailed yet low-poly keeping it on the cartoon-ish side of the spectrum.

That’s more “cartoony” style than Low poly. Low poly is having a low polygon count which your build does not have. It looks nice but it’s not Lowpoly.

Oh wow, a lot of 3D stuff! I think it needs more color because it does look a bit bland but yes I do love the design

Thank you for the compliment, but it’s not really meant to be a “colorful” type build. It’s medieval. Not a lot of colors during medieval times.

Very awesome! I could imagine this style in a game sometime (or other genres of building from you). It looks really high quality, with plenty of details and a variety of textures. Very well done

Looks absolutely amazing! What I’ve done in the past (but you need to practice it before you put it to use) is taken a screenshot of an area with lots of bricks in the pattern I want. Then I turn it into a texture and make the stud size as wanted. It reduces the amount of parts significantly and makes lag much lower. Screenshots must be straight and clear though. Just an idea if you want to reduce parts in some spots.

This is a very nice build but I only have a few concerns:

  • You could use textures instead of seperate bricks

Questions:
How many parts does this consist of?
Are the walls (bricks) consisting of meshes / unions?

Thank you.

I dislike using textures because I like 3D details.

Answers:

  1. Around 4500-5000. I don’t know the exact amount.
  2. The walls aren’t, but some things are.

Well done on your amazing build!

I specialise in medieval builds, so I thought I’d give you some more tips.

I see that you used this concept image, and you did really well!

I would suggest instead using mesh stone bricks with a bevel for the stone base to create this effect on your house:

Alternatively, you could use a stone brick texture to optimise it a lot more by using a texture like this:

I also used parts every now and then coming out to make it look more 3D.

Furthermore, some of the detailing on the sides of the wall is a little lacking, so I would recommend improving the wood panelling a little by extending the pattern, like here:

And here:

If you were interested in your optimising your build (because 4500-5000 is probably too high for a building in a game!) then I would recommend using textures rather than parts for it.

For example, all of these parts here are apart of one texture.

You could also improve this part here,

by adding something like this:

I would recommend experimenting with materials and textures a bit more to make it look more realistic. For example, you could replace the stone brick’s material with concrete or slate, or a custom texture. This would make it look more realistic.

Finally, to highlight your build, you should utilise terrain and lighting to accent the realism, like I did here:

Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback, Ahlvie. I’m very new to building houses and new to medieval-type builds. I love 3D details, which explains why there’s almost 5000 parts invested into this build. Most of the parts are from the roof. I mainly just specialize in smaller objects such as, furniture, doors/windows, etc…

But, ever since I started building more often since I’m off from school, I increased my building skills quite a bit. I definitely could’ve added more details to the house, but I got lazy after working for hours on the largest build I’ve ever built.

  1. I’m really bad with terrain and lighting
  2. I don’t use really use realism in builds [I’m more of a simplistic builder]
  3. Materials/Textures - I don’t really like using them. Which explains why I have A LOT of parts in builds because I want it to be 3D.

I’ll definitely improve this build in the future. But, I have other stuff I’m working on at the moment. I really appreciate your feedback. Have a great day!
