Working on my first playable game and I want some feedback on a couple of things that I want to add but feel as if they may be overlooked.
-
Lore
My game is about growing and harvesting trees to level up and unlock different trees (think idle tree farm style of game) BUT, I don’t know if lore is even worth putting in as I feel it often gets overlooked as people go straight for gameplay instead. What are your opinions on this? Do you as a player enjoy lore?
-
Vehicles to get across the map vs forcing the player to explore/ walk to other parts of the map. As a player do you enjoy a game with environmental upkeep and do you enjoy walking? Or, Would you rather use a vehicle to just get there faster?
-
Effects for certain game mechanics, As a player do you enjoy when a sound or “ding” plays when you earn money? Or, Would you much rather prefer a minimal UI and Sounds for a quieter gameplay experience?
Feedback is much appreciated!
I think lore is a good way of getting people excited about updates. Take Piggy: A big part of it was it’s massive lore. Loads of content creators made videos about Piggy lore, and it made people want to play it even more.

I personally love lore. There’s a lore in the Roblox game Brookhaven RP, for example. Role-playing games aren’t really my style. But I love the game because of the lore in Brookhaven, which lets players learn more about the origins of Brookhaven. I’m currently working on a game with lore myself. In my opinion, lore is a great way to make your game more unique, reach more players, and get them excited for new updates with new lore pieces. It makes your game more immersive when you can follow both the gameplay and the lore.
If you add lore to your game, you could also include secrets on the map. This makes exploring the map interesting, for example, with cars. It would be good to add cars if the map is large.
Finally, I have to say, I prefer quieter games. Loud sounds, like when you get money, remind me a lot of pay-to-win simulators. But I think most players wouldn’t mind.
I hope this feedback helps you!

I think that lore would be a very cool feature in your game, provided that it is optional, subtle, and makes sense within the gameplay. For example, you could have NPC characters (such as a carpenter) who narrate the lore or tutorial through short and simple text. Casual players coming across your game will usually skip past text-heavy elements, so you should try to avoid these at all costs.
You could even try adding lore as a reward rather than a requirement. For example, the player could progress through the storyline and unlock new parts of the lore as they reach new levels. This would give the player a sense of achievement and encourage continued play.

Vehicles could be gradually introduced into your game. Early-game walking is perfectly fine, as long as the map is not too large and doesn’t feel like a chore. Once new levels are reached, basic vehicles can be given to the player — like a bike or something else that fits your theme. This method preserves exploration but respects the player’s time. This approach only works well if the map is interesting and fun to explore.

I would say that most players enjoy success and positive sounds when earning money or progressing in a game, as it’s a key part of the dopamine loop. (Dopamine is a hormone released in the body that creates a sense of achievement and reward, encouraging players to continue playing.)
If you make the game the right way — which I’m sure you will — it could be a great idea. Good luck.
