Hello! I am Sid. I am usually a builder but decided to tryout GFX designing!
I am brand new and am looking forward to making many more so please be very critical because this is my first time and I want to learn as much as possible!
For the GFX, I based it off the new movie Top Gun Maverick.
Nice job, this is definitely one of the better firsts that I’ve seen.
Good job with the lighting behind the character model to account for the sun, a lot of people attempting GFX for the first time don’t consider, forget about or are unable to do lighting well; which is fair, good lighting is a learning process.
When it comes to criticism/suggestions though:
Look into learning lighting. Lighting is absolutely essential to making good looking pieces of 3D art because it helps you to define the shape(s) of objects a lot better. Same with shadows. Learning this will help you quite a lot when it comes to adding highlights. For an example of how you could have done this lighting differently, you could have used a faint brush with light orange/yellow to add some highlights to the hair at the top, as well as adding some more visible highlights to the side of the face, you could have done the same with the helmet as well as adding some light shadows to the helmet/side of the body facing closest to the camera, since it’s facing away from the light source.
Consider building 3D environments in studio and importing them, or learn the software you’re using a little more if need be and make some environments in there. Alternatively if you have no interest in doing 3D environments, look into learning photo manipulation. Unique environments help your pieces stand out
Using effects such as lens flares can really help, especially when you have a light source that you want to appear very bright, such as the sun. Also adds some more detail. There are a bunch of effect packs especially if you use Photoshop that you can find just by searching for them, would absolutely recommend finding one or a few of those that you like.
Otherwise, I refuse to be extremely critical of this because there’s really no need to be. To be able to produce something like this on your first attempt is pretty wild since it can take most people quite a while, and I think if you invested time and effort into improving and learning as much as you can, you’d become a pretty good GFX designer without a doubt. I think in your case it’s just a matter of becoming familiar with the tools in the applications you’re using.
I do have a few suggestions though. The character needs to blend more into the background, and the title needs to go on top. The lighting looks ok for the most part. @Christinoboga why steal my idea on reply (joke)
Thank you so much for your kind feedback and expert suggestions. Yesterday was also my first time using blender so I had no lighting experience. I was working purely off what looked cool and whatnot. I’ll be sure to watch a video to get a better idea of the software and be able to make better effects. I hadn’t thought to put effects like flares on photoshop. I’m sure it would’ve made a it a bunch better. With the shadows I’m assuming you put something like a point light behind it?? Sorry for my bad knowledge .
Thanks for your feedback! I will be sure to put the text in a place where it doesn’t cover anything next time. What do you mean by blending into the background?
