Feedback on Building Design

Hey guys,

I’m working on new buildings for my game. The game takes place in colonial times and I was trying to find the right amount of a balance between detail and low part counts. Currently almost all of the buildings in my game are copies of the same building just pasted around the entire map. I wanted to create a couple different versions of similar enough looking buildings to spice things up.

All of the buildings are currently the same color, but I plan to change the color and material depending on building location and context. Windows also light up once night falls to create a cool ambiance as well.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi, your build looks good but it definitely needs some improvement.

Suggestions

  • There’s too many muntin in the windows - you should remove one of the horizontal ones so the windows get divided by three horizontally and two vertically. Additionally, the windows are placed too high in each floor and is a bit too big. You should place dummies when building so you can compare the sizes and determine whether the alignment is too high or not. To end, the window on the roof extrusions look like they are touching the main roof. You should position it higher and give a bit of space.

  • You should make the posts clearer(bigger) and possibly add one in the middle. The current one in the corners doesn’t look that clear.

  • You should change the texture of the posts and beams, possibly concrete? You can try experimenting but they definitely shouldn’t be bricks. It just looks like wall extrusions and on a different color.

  • The shop would look better with double doors and some sort of sign or symbol indicating that it is a shop. In addition to that, you made the shop external walls wood(one of which extends to the second floor beam). Doing that would make it look inconsistent.

  • The shop shouldn’t be aligned with the main building as it makes it look like its internally connected with it. You should do it like this.

  • The roof should be angled higher, if you look at it from below and at a distance it would barely be seen.

Pretty Good so far! If you aren’t worried about low poly building(which I don’t think you are), I suggest trying to put more detail into a wall instead of just using the brick material.

Basically what @Tsunen said, but I would try to detail the walls a little more other than just using one color and material. Maybe try to incorporate multiple colors or add some depth to the wall. I get that you’re going to low part counts, but a game can handle tens of thousands of parts. As long as there aren’t too many unions, you’ll be fine.

I would change the colors up, and make sure you can notice things that are different colors. Right now it’s way too hard to see the different layers of the houses
