Hi there, I’m working on a city game and I’d like some feedback. The game is in no way near finished yet, but I’d like to know if there’s any revisions I should make. I haven’t been working on the game for very long, only about two months.
This is the lobby area, it’s one of the fist things I made so it doesn’t look too great. I’ll be remaking some things in the future for sure, but this is what it’s going to be for now.
Here’s another view, there’s quite a few buildings but lots of them are placeholders. Since they’re hard to see from these angles I’ll just list some of the stores that I can remember. There’s a grocery store, office building, noodle restaurant, hotel, bank, clothing store, arcade, and a few more that I can’t quite remember.
This is the part where the office building is, there isn’t much here but I was going for a gloomy sort of vibe.
I’d also like to note that this is my first actual big game project and that I’ve learned so much while making this and improved a ton that some buildings may look a lot worse than others. I am also new here on the forums, so let me know if I’ve made any mistakes or if this topic is in the wrong category.
Anyways I hope I can hear from you soon, and have a lovely rest of your day!
Hey! It looks great so far! My only recommendation is that you might want to add a few details to some empty looking areas such as the wall on the right in the last picture, maybe add a few brick shapes sticking out in different shades, it might look interesting! Other then that, it looks amazing and I’m so excited to play when it comes out!
I really like it! I love the little details and all the colors. One thing I would try to implement is taller buildings. The sort of “rule of thumb” I go by when making cities is when I can look straight and see the sky, it feels off. It’s almost like the city starts feeling more like a village. When you have to look up, not even far, to see the sky it gives a much larger, enclosed feeling, sort of like a real city. (Again, I really love the builds)
Thanks! I’ll try to implement that the best I can, do you have any tips on how to make them still look different and not just blobs of buildings though? I tend to make all the fake buildings/placeholders really repetitive, plus I’m quite a lazy person so that doesn’t help much haha.
A way I see to do this is to think about different types of tall buildings, you can have a corporation, usually bigger, you have apartments (A good idea with these is to add a ‘wealth’ factor to it, such as slightly run down dark reddish brown brick buildings to a nicer, well kept up place preferably with a lighter color.) Apartments are usually smaller, again, based on the wealth. Then you can have random buildings such as small buildings surrounded by big buildings (Not so big as to make it look out of place.) Then try to add different shape buildings, a huge factor in the repetitiveness is details. For apartments, add a fire escape (most likely rusted or something.) For the taller, business buildings I would add (slightly a stretch) a window cleaning platform, something that would bring the city alive. Other than decorations I would add little indented sides with a little pattern to the corners to differentiate the buildings. Also make some have tiny 2 or 3 stairs leading up to the door. Try to add different shape roofs (example; Empire State Building with its unique roof design.) That would be a little too hard I think so just try like domes or something. Also try to add vegetation.
Last tiny thing: try to add bus stops to give a more ‘alive’ feel to the game, like there is actual people living there with transportation.
Please don’t think I’m like trying to take over your game or anything like that I just thought that these things could be useful, but at the end of the day your game is up to you.
Hello! It’s been a while and I completely forgot to show you the updated version, but heres the wall, I tried to give it a cartoony-ish look, like how they draw brick walls in cartoons.
