Feedback on my first blender model

Here is my first blender model i made without a tutorial and i’d like some feedback. i already know it isn’t great, but how should i improve?

This is great considering how intimidating Blender can be when you create your first model!

Now as for improving, learn the basics of Blender so you get to play around and mess until you find a style fit to your liking. I personally would recommend to start with a “low-poly mindset”, as in without much design, sure it may look somewhat cartoon-ish, but this would help improve your basics and you would go onto making detailed models after you go through this modelling phase.

Yeah, i’d only made one other thing, a basic tree, but i strictly followed a tutorial. Thanks for the feedback, i’m definitely hoping to improve with my blender skills going forward.

That’s great, the advice i’d give as a start is to look for:

  • Topology - this is mostly for the polygon count, you’ll be doing this for the most part, aim for well-distributed polygons, efficient edges and vertices.

  • Geometry - Check for no twisted faces or warped (this will happen a lot, atleast in my experience I always miss one, clumsy me.)

Now there’ll be much more, such as UV Wrapping, Material and Shading, etc… but you’ll get to those as you improve!

This Blender model looks great! Especially if it’s your first one ever! Great job on it! Whenever you learn how to model better, you should make the top of the mailbox rounded. How long did it take to make?

Thank you for the feedback, it did not take long to make. Maybe about 15-20 minutes, considering i had watched basic introduction tutorials to blender so i had some idea what i was doing

Your model appears to have flat colors with no texturing, which can work for a simple style but could be improved by adding textures. For example, adding wood grain to the post and a metal texture to the mailbox itself would slightly enhance realism.

For a first creation made on Blender, it looks nice!

I highly recommend what @Quenonias stated in his replies… Start learning the basic principles of Blender, from interfaces to modifiers as well as how you can improve the topology (“anatomy”) of your 3D asset.

During 2021, still, in the pandemic situation, I began learning how to use Blender by comprehending the interfaces as they were somewhat similar to how Roblox Studio offers. Both of them use almost identical shortcuts and it is flexible to get it! :smiley:

My first 3D creations were a whole low poly pack for a practice project to create a spleef mini-game, from a coin with 7 edges (heptagon) to a flat tree!

There were more creations, but they became a “lost media”…

Some things I recommend checking out are utilizing the feature to extrude faces, insert faces (both are a bit similar), and utilize bevel. These things help to produce creations with unique quality

There are many other things to consider when checking it out and practicing. You can try learning from YouTube content creators. For instance, RoBuilder has created many useful tutorials over the years that can help beginners get started with Blender. I found them helpful, and you might too!

Its simple but looks good, I started using blender on the old versions before the new interface etc, it was much more intimidating.

But once I learned good useful keyboard shortcuts, it was easier.
My advice would be to follow a few beginners tutorials/tips etc.

And just continue to build things for fun/practice.

use hard normals if it’s like low poly count, or if detailed, you can use smooth normals

For a first model its pretty decent!

However, just one tip, I would recommend using “Shade Auto Smooth” instead of just “Shade Smooth”
Shade Smooth:

Shade Auto Smooth (Angle 30º) :

No Smooth Shading:

The difference between the 2 is very noticable, “Shade Smooth” will just make every corner look rounded which looks very bad on squares, the first thing I noticed with your model is how theres no visible edges on the mailbox, and it has the (pretty bad) shading issue that comes with Shade Smooth.

And, for a low-poly style I’d either use Shade Auto Smooth or No Smooth Shading.

Thanks for the detailed feedback! These are definitely things i can improve on and yeah, i also noticed the shadow thing was kinda weird. I’ll look to fix this, thanks!

Jokes aside, this is pretty decent! I know how confusing Blender can be starting out, and I think you did pretty good! :+1:

It took me a good minute to figure out the Editor, and you seem to have gotten the hang of using it. :melting_face:
