Feedback on my Game?

Hi everyone, I would really appreciate if you could please check out my new game and provide me with some feedback.

The game has a few problems, that I’ll put in the order I believe are most to least significant:

  • Objectiveless gameplay:
There is no sense of obligation/directon to do anything in the game. This means that the player does not fully understand what they are meant to do to ‘win’, or feel motivated to this goal. All we are given are some btools and a sword. With no instructions or goal, what is the player expected to do? I know the title is ‘Build a Town’, but if building a town is the goal, there should be clear incentives for fulfilling this goal, for example rewards in the forms of coins / gems. There should also a clear line of progression, for example a levelling system.

  • Random free models
Free models are not the issue (although they aren’t helping); the fact that they do not complement each other is. All of the tools appear to be free modelled / very slightly edited to fit your game, however for your game to feel complete, each feature of the game should feel purposeful and bespoke to your game, while connecting well to each other. If you take free models and do too little to edit them to suit your game, the entire game will feel like a frankenstein-ish mess of the toolbox tab, rather than a real game.

  • Bad build
The overall quality of the game is lacking, however the building is not only lacking in quantity, but also quality. There are random car spawners for no reason, a mini forest with a cabin in the middle, a train that does not move and a billboard which says nothing on it. These assets don’t seem to be placed in any particular fashion, making them seem like they are just dotted around the map for the sake of it. The builds are also not particularly pretty, or seem to have any specific theme, making the game seem just disjointed and confused.

Overall, I think the game needs to be redone (the building especially). The scripting does seem to be well done (regardless of whether they’re free models or not), however the visuals of the game (including UI, buidling, VFX / lack thereof) are mismatched and do not make me want to return to the game.

I like the concept. If lobbies had more people or I was playing with friends this would be a fun game to play for a bit. Some issues I found was that the lighting seems to be a bit overkill. The bloom is way too high and makes every block look like its glowing. I think the sound when you destroy blocks is a little too loud as if you destroy all your blocks it hurts your ears, and I was even playing with the lowest audio. I like the billboard for donations and how many hours played. Some issues with the building system is that you can delete other players blocks. Sometimes you can place a block where there is already something. The game lacks a “main gameplay loop” other than to build there’s really nothing else to do. Some suggestions/ideas I have is maybe being able to create parties with other players, and you could add blueprints for builds so that players can all work together to fill in a blueprint of a skyscraper or something like that. I don’t really see the point of the forest, at least spread out the trees in a more natural way as they are all clustered together super evenly and it doesn’t look great. My final suggestion is adding a simple sprint system so player’s can move faster around the world. It’s a simple touch but adds a lot. You can see a lot of simulator and tycoon games do this. Overall I think the game has great potential and the scripting is pretty good. The game logo fits and the UI is decent. After some polish, and advertising I bet you could attract a player base.

Way too basic as people have mentioned in your other threads.
Imo there are two ways on how such games can work:

  1. Have a game packed with features that players can enjoy even without other players
  2. Have a basic game that is fun enough to join with even just a few players

Your game doesn’t fit into those two as there’s plainly said nothing to do. Yes, building mode is cool, but there are plenty of big games that have an advanced building mode already and where you already have a good player count.

You’ll have it hard gaining players if you don’t add good features and make the game make some sense in a way that players will come back. Tycoons work because there can be zero players and you still have something to do. RP games work because there’s no real goal but you have the players and still a lot to explore.

So, here some ideas:

  • Only post a new thread when you actually have good updates
  • Make players earn/reveal blocks by building. E.g. they have to build a house, then earn money, then can buy more blocks
  • Make blocks as achievements, for example they have to first break blocks to be able to use them
  • Make players work as construction workers, so they have to build a specific house, or for example it says “build a house with 1000 blocks to earn X” etc.
  • Since your server currently has building everywhere allowed, maybe make that players collectively have to build a building and then earn money per block (but can’t remove anything from that building)
