Feedback on my Medieval Styled Houses

Greetings Travelers. Recently I started one of my largest project, a medieval town and I would love some feedback on them so I can improve my builds.

The style I’m going for are Cartoony/Low Poly

Houses

Low Detailed Houses

The point of these houses are strictly for decorations to fill up spaces on the map. I’m trying to copy and paste the basic structure of the houses while adding minor details to them to make them look different.

My Attempt on a curved roof house

I created a curved roof using the plugin called Archimedes Two. The only problem I encountered was filling in the top side of the house; picture below since I had no idea how to explain it. The way I fixed it was copy and waste the already made roof and drag them downward and extend them until they cover up the top side of the house. I’m wondering if there is another easier and more efficient way of doing this.

Question:

  • Am I using too much wood as detail for the houses? If yes what can I do to switch to add details to the houses while maintaining the low poly and medieval style?
  • How can I create builds with a curved roof using studio (See Image below)? How would I start?

  • How can I create the brick detailed on the roof(See Image Below)? Would I have to just copy and paste parts on top of the roof or is there an easier way to do it?

Personally, I don’t think you’re over-doing the wood. For my comment, it looks really nice, since it’s a big project do some research. Heck, watch a medieval movie. Just my perspective, I mean everyone loves movies.

Amazing buildings, they do capture the look of “Medieval”. I don’t think you’re overdoing the wood but maybe you can add more detail to the chimneys. You could add something similar to this design on them.

Thank you for your response. Will take your advice and watch a medieval movie for research and fun.

You might want to do some research into how medieval buildings were constructed. From what I know, their foundations were made out of stone walls and then it went to the timber frames and mixture of thatch and clay.

Add some signage on the buildings and brickwork on the chimneys. Be expressive about it. Have roofs that curve at different angles and sections of the buildings that lean. Look up low poly designs online. And try different colors in the wood.

Overall looks really good.

I do apologize for cracking a joke, but really movies do help with inspiration. Especially because they do research on how the actual thing was. King Arthur Legend Of the Sword is a good movie and the building’s resemble the medieval era.

They looks pretty good. I love the windows on them, and the overall look to them. I would like to suggest that you should add some brick textures like the house to the chimneys. Other than that, good job!

Thanks for your feedback. I will add the brick details to the chimneys. I normally dislike the brick details whenever I do them, they just don’t look good or don’t blend in well. Is there any general rules I should follow when applying those brick details? Any color schemes I should follow?

Wood is perfect for me, it seems very accurate for medieval houses. The detail is perfect, and each house has their own unique design.

However I have a few comments,

The bridge on the leftmost house needs more structural integrity since it is made of stone. I suggest it be placed somewhere else than under a door.

I think some color variety might also add a new layer of beauty.

I have attempted to make roofs with curves but failed. Any tips on how to?

All your houses look great.
I love how you made the windows neon orange which makes it look like there are lights on, it’s an amazing touch.
No you’re not using way too much wood as a detail. The amount of wood you’ve used looks great.

Oh yeah it totally is xD

One thing I have noticed is that video production is incredibly skilled in the art of set making and therefore scenery, environment, and architecture. I look at all kinds of shows for architectural inspiration, because video-makers and animation studios are in the art of creative craft. So sometimes looking at these you can find architecture like none other.

Your build looks very nice but the windows should be changed to have a bit more detail. Also, the third building should have windows on the first floor and the fifth one on the second floor(First picture).

As for curved blocks, you should try the plugin ‘Archimedes 2.0’. This plugin is very helpful for anything that needs a curve from arc, boats, and roofs.

The medieval theme is there. However, in my opinion, I believe that the colour scheme should be changed to have a slightly darker shade as medieval buildings are usually depicted to be “dark”

There’s a range of ways you can make curved roofs, however, the way I personally find the easiest is rotating the parts.

Firstly, I create the tip of the roof.

I then create another part and rotate it from that tip.

Simply extend the roof by now doing the same thing but with more parts until you achieve a desired 'curve'

Finally, duplicate the parts from one side to the other, and then you can duplicate both sides again and move it away from the roof border and resize it.'

Alternatively, you can use unions for the roof and negate parts until you achieve a curve.

Thank you. I’ll try that out later

If you don’t like doing them, you can refrain from doing them (I think you’re applying them good). You could try making it look something like this, instead of adding that design;

Thank you for the response, will try your suggestion out.

Updated post with my attempt on a house with a curved roof. Would love some feedback on how I did.

Amazing design and building. Try tho using a bit more of the stone instead of the tons of wood supports. Add a few more windows in the 2nd floor of the last one

and add some bricks as extra detail and decoration. The curved roof would look pretty good if you used it making it exactly awesome. Medieval buildings should have more of bricks, stone and curved roofs (on different shapes).

Good work tho.
