I just rolled out my game on Friday. It is called “Fairy Rescue from the Forgotten Forest”. I worked on this with my daughter. It’s been a work in progress for many many months. I would appreciate any constructive criticism (or compliments). Thanks for any response. The link is below:
I’m replying to my own post, as I wanted to get feedback on a specific question. Currently, when you join the game, you’re in a waiting/lobby area. There is a sign-up board to join the fairy rescue team. I tried to make the waiting area interesting, in order to encourage exploration. Right now the player has to actively click/tap on the sign-up board to join the team. At the start of the new round, all players on the board are transported to the play area. Should I change this, so that a player is automatically added to the sign-up board when they first join the game? They could still remove their name by clicking on the board. Thanks.
it’s lovely to hear that you’ve developed this experience with your daughter and I hope you two had a blast during the process - some of that youthful magic is definitely present in the game. Unfortunately however, I found it not to be overly engaging. I’ll try to break down why below.
Plain gameplay
The gameplay is lacking severe depth. Collecting fairies is no hinderance or challenge whatsoever, but rather a hassle - rescuing them does not feel rewarding at all as no effort is required to catch them. I would aimlessly strive through the forest collecting a dozen fairies along the way, not investing any thought.
I’d love to see fairies which vary in their speed (dependent on their color), hide in certain bushes or are locked in a tree only accessible via some sort of parkour - there’s countless opportunities to modify the gameplay, even for younger audiences.
Low replayability
Your experience’s premise is to rescue the greatest amount of fairies possible and explore a phantasy-esque map, setting new highscores while doing so. Personally, that approach is too simplistic - a leaderboard and singular map, even though beautifully assembled, won’t get players to return. Allow fairies to be exchanged for items which support players on their rescue mission, add quests (e.g. collecting X fairies of X type) or another way of freshly re-experiencing the gameplay in place. Currently it appears to me that I have seen all there is to see, despite taking part in only two rounds.
Lacking dynamics and interactivity
For an experience which focuses on traversing a landscape, movement doesn’t feel exactly satisfying as the standard Roblox controls are in place. Generally, the game felt stale. Apart from more fleshed out controls I am missing dynamic music (e.g. tension upon the final 10 seconds of the rescue, instead of the same track constantly looping over), resistant fairies which might not immediately intend to be rescued and repel the player - be creative and charmful!
I hope I was able to provide the feedback you were looking for. Irrespective to all the negatives I had to point out, your and your daughter’s project is nothing to scoff at - a tiny, magical experience with a marvelous map.
I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time for such a thoughtful critique. There are elements that you mentioned which struck a cord with me.
For example I loved the following “I’d love to see fairies which vary in their speed (dependent on their color), hide in certain bushes or are locked in a tree only accessible via some sort of parkour - there’s countless opportunities to modify the gameplay, even for younger audiences.”
We will try to implement some of these features in the future. Thanks again. Your feedback was exactly the thing I was looking for.
