Feedback on Sketch/Art

Hi, I’m looking for feedback on this sketch. [Yes, I am aware that the placement of the hand is a bit off.]

Main focus: I tried to improve on my understanding of depth and how to make my art look more 3D. I need help with this!

I don’t like the long nails its just too long, but anyways you’re choice if you want to add the nail or no.

LOL, I drew my character from a game and the accessory they are wearing has nails, but I understand your thinking xD

This is a sketch so there isn’t any shading.

Which topic was this in before?

It was previously in #help-and-feedback:art-design-support.

I mean if you aren’t going to add shadows, then it looks good enough to me

I don’t understand how you can create depth without shading. Shading is way you make your art look less flat and more 3D. You need to pick a direction the light is coming from (the left, the right, the front, the back, etc.) Next, you add shadows on the areas that the light is blocked off, and add highlights where the light is directly hitting. That’s how you create depth; you use shadows and highlights.

This is a misunderstanding, when I mean depth, I was just talking about the hair. I have a tendency of making it look very flat, so I was just trying to make it look more 3D.

Flat:

The hair doesn’t look realistic, half of it is basically behind her head and looks off.

Not flat:

I see what you mean. I think you need to be more bold with your shading. On the hair, I can see some shading, but the highlights, shadows, and base color are all so similar you can’t really tell. Try to add more contrast with your shading. Also, instead of using a darker/lighter version of the same color, use a slightly different shade or a more saturated version (i.e. if the hair is purple, add shadows with a darker, blueish purple or a darker, more saturated purple). Otherwise, the colors will look muddy and dull.
