Hi so i’m starting to accept jobs/commusions for sound design and music composition. Because this reason i’ve decided to start a website which will host my portfolio. It took me a little while to make and i would like to hear some feedback on what lets say a client would think. Yes im using a website builder but its just for test purposes.
In your opinion should i just stick to a simple post or should i carry on creating a website? In you mind what would be more appealing.
I wouldn’t create a website because it doesn’t make much sense. Your work isn’t something visual, so you wouldn’t have something to show on the site besides some audio clips. I would stick with a single forum post and link audios you have already uploaded to Roblox.
If you wanted to stick with the website I would make sure you use high-quality imagery. Also, I wouldn’t add unnecessary text such as “No, I was not born in 2005.” It doesn’t matter how old you are if your work is excellent.
Thanks for the feedback. I do agree i would be easier to do this but I just wanted to try my hand at Web design. BTW the reason the image are low quality is because I was using the free version of their website builder. I would upload better images but it just gave me an error saying that the image was to large.
In my opinion using a website with cool design would attract more clients as you will look more reliable to them. When I see a portfolio website, the first thought that comes to my mind is “Okay, this guy values the job he’s doing”. Just stick to both a topic and a website, it wouldn’t hurt to do so.
I mean, it wouldn’t hurt to have a website. It’s just extra work. Like MemeProduced said, if I saw someone that had a website, I’d be thinking this person is pretty professional, but still would judge and buy based off the work in the portfolio nonetheless.
By the way, the lock at the top left means that in this page your passwords and credit cards are secure, but it doesn’t mean that it can be dangerous for your computer.
If you are going to use a website for your portfolio, I suggest you to use Google Sites.
Have a nice day.
Yeah it’s most likely because it has zyro in the url. Some other site using the same platform most likely got flagged which resulted in my site also becoming flagged by Norton. Gonna most likely switch to my own domain which should fix it.
I’m not familiar with the music industry however, professionals such as @BSlickMusic might be able to give better insight on marketing techniques used to enhance sales.
The layout itself isn’t visually appealing so that’ll discourage picky clients from collaborating with you based on a terrible first impression.
Free domains gives off the misinterpretation that you’re not confident enough to invest money into your business, which one than lead to “if he isn’t confident in his work, than why should I be confident it’ll gain any monetary value?” If a potential client doesn’t believe you’re worth x amount than they’ll shift their attention to someone who is perceived as x amount. You’re always judged on everything you do, can’t appease everyone yet you can appease the majority.
Fear mongering is terrible for business, doesn’t matter who caused the mistake it just has to be resolved before the damage is done. Your goal in this particular scenario is to identify the why it happened, and how it can be resolved before you lose more potential customers . Hypothetically you could’ve lost a potential $500 offer because they were discouraged by the warning.
Simplify the process for the client, if it’s an over complicated system than the client is more likely to lose interest rather than continue to be interested. Current steps taken to access the MP3 sample:
Identify the sample you’re interested in
Redirect to Soundcloud
Press play
Redirect back to the original webpage to identify another sample
Simplify it to:
Identify the Mp3 sample without redirecting to SoundCloud. Have the .mp3 file easily accessible on your website rather than rely on a third party.
Identify different .Mp3 sample that peaked their interest.
Here’s why simplifying is important , you’re not the only composer on this platform meaning you’re competing with other composers for the client’s interest. If the client had a better experience with a different composer than that composer already took your job in a matter of seconds. It’s a competitive world out there meaning first impressions will dictate your success rate.
I believe a website was a step in the right direction, it was just poorly executed. Never settle for only Roblox developers, expand past the Roblox demographic to reach a worldwide audience by having a professionally made website.
I.e one of my business associates recently designed this website using a design service known as wix.
The website referenced above is:
Visually appealing
Inexpensive to create
Easy to navigate through.
Holding you to the same standards isn’t unreasonable of me to do so if you wanted me to take you serious as a professional composer rather than a amateur or hobbyist. While previous experience is always appreciative, how you market yourself is the most important in closing the deal. If you market yourself poorly than you only get minimal-0 satisfactory results.
Thanks alot for all the feedback. I do agree that the layout of the website isn’t that great. A Lot of the problems i had when making the website was also cause by me not being able to properly upload mp3 files to the website. Another thing is that the website designer is highly locked down. It only has a set grid which you are able to move objects around. Plus there was no option for backend coding. I was trying for along time to upload mp3 to the website but i was already so far into it that i just stuck to uploading links. I doesn’t help that i designed the website in one sitting late at night.
I completely understand all your criticisms and in the future i think i’ll use a service like Squarespace, Wordpress or Wix. It was just simply meant to be a test thats also why i didn’t pay for it.
I think that for now at least i’ll just stick to a post and work on a website in the meantime.
Thank you a lot for going in great detail in this. I will definitely take most if not all the criticisms you took and improve on it. Thanks again for taking the time to write this. Have a nice day
The site is pretty professional but not until you found out you made the website with a website creator.
If possible, why not try coding one and host it with your own domain?
However, you should only make a website for your portfolio, when you become popular enough.
