Hey, I’m currently working on a fiction city based in Japan. The city is called Kamurocho, I would appreciate it if I had any feedbacks on it. I am trying to replicate the city off a game called Yakuza Kiwami 2.
I haven’t built for about three years now and I’m practising my building skills, please be brutally honest and tell me what to improve on it and I’ll improvise it.
WARNING: Still work in progress, I apologises if it’s too dark.
Haha, everyone says it’s cyberpunk vibe, but really it’s basic neon signs used in Japan. I’m planning to build a huge city of it and of course I’ll replicate Japanese letters. Thank you.
The big things that I’m looking at is layout and texturing. Try to make these textures blend, I see some plastic then some brick, then some concrete, then some metal, etc. All of this COULD be done together but the way you’re tackling it doesn’t really fit any visual appeal.
Layout wise, try working on the neon. It doesn’t look bad but the colors could 100% have a better blend if you don’t mix up these colors like mumbo jumbo. I can definitely see the detail you’re going for and it’s a step in the right direction but try refining it more. A japanese city does have many lights but it also has enough lights and colors to the point where it doesn’t get visually overbearing.
Thanks for the feedback. Obviously, still work in progress I will add some textures once the part of it is completed.
For now, I have added the most realistic possible textures to match the replica of the city and I don’t plan to tackle on visual aspects because most people don’t focus on the buildings if the city is huge enough to explore.
For layout wise, the neon is like that like that in order to save the amount of parts and the colours are mumbo jumbo because the signs I’m referencing has several coloured advertisements. Nonetheless, the city does have a lot of neon, but I’m planning to get it turn into darker neon or plastic when it’s day time as I will implement a weather system so it’s aesthetically appealing to viewers eyes.
Currently using a Playstation 4 for references to the game as it’s more accurate than taking off images from Google.
It’s clearly a work in progress but if you’re going for a simplistic look this is very good! But considering that I’ve been building for a couple of years now, I’ve seen extremely detailed pieces of work. There is so much more that can be added. Better windows, different shapes, more realistic looking stuff. Usually I look up references on google and try to recreate them to the best of my ability so I suggest that you do that with your reference. Take your time and experiment with different things. Just have fun while doing it!
How much or how long? I did everything myself so it’s free and I started the project in February and I put it off until April, that is when I started to focus on it properly.
I really like it. Here would be my more substantial comments. One thing that is everywhere in Japan is vending machines. I’d say they’re a staple of any Japanese urban setting (and even rural! I’ve seen them in between farmer’s fields before)
Not sure if this really fits with a yakuza game, but often, Japanese cities have their own unique town mascot. For example:
I don’t know how faithful you want to stick to the game, but I guess it could be quite a fun project to make your own mascot and have it on posters around the city telling schoolchildren how to cross the road safely etc. as you commonly see in Japan. But once again, if you want to base this off a serious gritty game, perhaps it wouldn’t fit in.
Haha, Yakuza games often have several of vending machines across the city. Of course, the mascot will be included infact it’s called Ono Michio. I will be including posters, possibly instruction about road safety, but it’s irrelevant to the game since there is no educational institution in the game. Thank you for the suggestion, I’ll have a look.
It looks very clean to me personally. As much as I like how much the buildings look on the outside, I would also consider working on the interior layout too if you haven’t already. It’d be nice to go inside and have it as stunning as the outside.
Hey there, thank you! I’m considering making interior designs for more appropriate places such as shops, bars, clubs. Most of these buildings do not have interiors, to my knowledge.
Something else I’ve just remembered. Japanese political parties are very bad at remembering to take down their election posters, and, if I may say so, are not the best at putting them in places. So you get about 2 or 3 of the same poster stuck next to each other that are just left up a good long while after the election took place. I suppose that could be another fun thing to include? What is quite helpful is that Japanese posters aren’t that clear about which party they represent, meaning you wouldn’t have to be particularly partisan. This would be by no means a necessity but it would be another cool feature I guess to tie that in. That being said, I believe the Yakuza do have ties to some political parties in Japan (but I’ve never played the game you’re basing it on, so I don’t know how/if the Yakuza’s lobbying/deepstate elements tie into the game at all, but either way, I reckon that could be a whole game in on of itself.
But once again, I think the city looks very nice, a lot of hard work ahs been put into it!
The game does not include any political parties whatsoever, but there was some politicians characters throughout the stories of Kiwami and Kiwami 2. I’ll have a look and see if I could include some posters of that. You are accurate, the Japanese political parties often forget to take posters down, thank in advance.
