First Ever Build!

Hey guys, I’m looking for feedback on the first time I’ve ever actually built something. I am working closely with a scripter now as well to eventually turn this into a game. The map is about 33% done I’d say. It’s a Vietnam-themed map for a war game I have been planning for a while. Heavily inspired by a game called Rising Storm 2! This took about 8 hours a day for 2 weeks straight.

Looks great! Especially for your first build. One thing though… the rooftops of most buildings are very bland, and just stop at the wall. Usually buildings have overhangs, pipes etc.

I love the atmosphere you created and all the nice textures! Although the actual buildings are bland and need more detailing, I do think they are very nice for your first build.

Looks good for a first build so good job on that. Although I think some areas are still a bit plain and open and can use some filling with possibly props and or little addition to fill up some space and make it more alive. I kept in mind that the game is not finished yet so maybe you were inted to do that but for the rest it looks pretty good so far for a first build.

I have just joined the game and I do have some design critiques. As I said before the atmosphere is nice. The choice of skybox combined with fog make it feel like a mountain in Vietnam. There are some things that I found that took out of the experience.

  • The first thing I noticed was how fast the character was moving. It looked like they were running around way too fast.
  • There was also no sound design. Sound can bring a game from mediocre to good. Even a simple ambient wind sound would do wonders.
  • There were also some spots around the map where you could go through one building and when trying to reach another pathway there were invisible walls. In my opinion, you should try to not use much invisible walls and instead try to limit the player by a more natural means. Such as the path may be blocked by some boxes someone left laying around. It helps bring in the immersion of the place you are trying to create.

Thank you guys for the feedback, I appreciate it. I plan to add water pipes coming down the sides of the buildings. They will be used as a mechanic in the game actually. The Vietnamese were historically more mobile then the Americans. For that reason, certain buildings will have pipes that only the Vietnamese can climb up and down to access certain rooftops.

That being said, the players will all be really slow when the game gets to that point. Right now I have it super quick so when I test things I can get there quicker.

Another issue I wanted to address,

I agree completely with this statement, and it actually use to be really bad to where it was just the road up the middle of the map and a little piece of grass behind the cities on both side. I realized as well that it doesn’t feel natural and I will be looking for ways to expand the sides of the map. My problem is trying to navigate traffic from the left side of the map to the right side since objective B and A are far from each other.

Thank you for the feedback! I will look for ways to add props and make the buildings look less plain every day.

I whole heartily agree with the sound design statement as a composer myself.

Not bad. You did really well, especially as a first-time builder.
