The swirl is too distracting. You want to have a good background, but not one that takes all the attention from the main visual, and in this case, it’s the pet.
How would I make it good? 
Maybe make the background a screenshot of your game (I know this icon is just practice, but this suggestion is for making one for a real game). Blur and crop the screenshot to make it look cool, and undistracting.
I was going for one of those type of sim games where they have a pet infront and then swirls in the back
The eyes are outlined in a pixelly white, and as GalaxyGourmet said, the swirl is very distracting. Not too bad otherwise.
