Free Models, Good or Bad?

Hello fellow developers!

“Free Models” is, as many of you may know, a contreversial topic among players and developers. Some “Hate” them (quotations because “hate” is a strong word) and some “Love” them (same as before).
However, as it is a kind of controversial topic, I think that it would be good to discuss it and get both sides of the coin, the players and developers. So in this post I will give some versions of free models on Roblox, as well as some scenarios they may get paired with.

“Normal” Free Models
So, free models in general are looked down upon by some players (atleast those I’ve met) and, it is maybe not for the right reasons. Here is a scenario: Let’s say you’ve been working on a game for hours and hours on end, and you are so tired that you cant make another model.

So you import a free model from the toolbox and launch the game. But on the first day that it is public, you get a bunch of players that talk bad about your game, just because of one model from the toolbox. Even if everything else in the game is hand-made you get negative impressions for one free model.

Its really frustrating that one small thing can get so much negativity. Now, some people might argue that its lazy to use free models, and they’ve got a point. But we have all used them at one point whether it be a script or an entire build. Some of them also look unpleasing to look at, and some of them are. Regardless, these are the kinds of free models that are the most common to see. But there are two more types I want to talk about.

Leaked/Pulled Models
The almost as well known version of free models, the leaked/pulled models. These models were pulled/leaked from games by using exploits or whatnot to effectively make developers or even studio’s hard work an asset that anyone can use.

And, I get where the dislike is coming from here, since it’s really frustrating to have worked hours to make a map, NPC or GUI’s just for it to be made public without your permission, this isn’t as common (I think) but is still something to talk about. I dont even think a scenario is nececcary since the name is all you need to understand what this is.

Copied Free Models
Well, free models of free models does exist and I am not joking. There are people that copy other people’s free models just to re-upload them as their own, and many of them don’t even credit the original creator.

Worse yet, you dont know which one is the original one since most copied models have been copied many, many times. These are the least known kind of free models (I think, again. Tell me if I’m wrong in the replies.). Scenario: Let’s say you made a model that you want to share with the world, and make it a free model so anyone can use it. But one week later, you search your model in the library and 3-5 copies comes up, and worse yet is the fact that they get more favorites, thumbs up and sales than your original version.

Those are all the versions of free models that I know of, and now I lend the voice to you, readers of this post. Please discuss the positives and negatives with free models as a whole as well as talk about each of these three if you want. Note that I will read all of the replies and opinions y’all have.

And with that, I say bye for now!
