Freelancer guide: mistakes to avoid when looking for commissions

Who am I?

I am Wolo, the main scripter of the Roblox RTS game [( ✦ ) [RUSSIA] Conquest: Napoleonic Wars] ([RUSSIA] Conquest: Napoleonic Wars [Pre-Alpha] - Roblox) and ( ✦ ) Ages Of Iron 2: Punic Wars [Early Alpha]. I have been interested in RTS from 13. Over 2+ years of experience in Roblox scripting and 3+ years as freelancer.

I also have a short video about my experience as a Roblox RTS developer: My experience as a Roblox RTS games developer - YouTube

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

This post is mainly aimed at those freelancers that search for commissions in Discord, though some things of this post can be taken to other job searching areas aswell.

I have both worked as freelancer and have searched for freelancers. I have learned form my mistakes and I have seen the mistakes of people that contact me for a job.

This post purpose is to teach you what mistakes a lot of freelancers make, and also provide you with information that helps reduce the frustration of not finding a job.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are not the only one that sent a private message about the job offer; do not get frustrated

When I started working as freelancer, I got frustrated when people did not even respond to the private messages, no matter how detailed it was or how much work I presented. I frequently asked myself why?

When I started searching for freelancers myself, I understood the answer. You just have to wait a day after you post one job offer, and if it is good enough, you will get flooded by messages. You just will not respond to those that do not interest you; you may even not even see their messages at all.

You do not have to get frustrated if the person that posted the job offer does not even see the message. It is completely normal, they likely have a ton of other persons that sent their portfolios aswell. This does not mean that you should do things like “DM back if you are interested…”

These things automatically discard you, do not do these

  • Some people searching for freelancers put things like “DM with :fire: emoji if you are interested”. Not doing this makes the person know you did not read the entire post, and will get you ignored inmmediately.

  • Do not send messages as “my portfolio is in my profile description”. They are not gonna waste time searching for it. Provide the link directly. Ideally, you should make it as easy as possible to the person to know who they are talking to exactly.

  • Do not just send one message like “hello, is the post still available”? or “dm back if the post is still available”. As I said, the person you are messaging likely have a ton of other people capable enough for the job that also sent their portfolios waiting for a response. They are not gonna waste time dming you back if they are not interested.

  • Just send your portfolio and say who you are. That is all what the person will want to know when looking into your private message. The structure of your message should be:

"Hello, I am XXXX, I have XX years of experience and I have worked on XXXX. I am interested in your job offer.

You can see my work in (provide links) and you can also see my Github in here. (Include any other important link about you, like a LinkedIn, a curriculum is also nice)."

  • Only showcase your actual good work. I have gotten freelancers that show their code from when they were starting in the programming world. This increases your chance of bieng rejected.

  • Do not insist. If you see the person is not responding, they are most likely not interested in you. Spamming private messages to them will not increase your chance of being accepted at all, it will increase the chance of rejection.

  • Make sure your profile in all the links you sent is as professional as you can. A lot of people has sent messages to me with anime girls as profile pictures. Someone that looks professional is preferable.

End

This post was a bit short, but I made sure to put all the mistakes I have seen freelancers do when searching for a job, mainly in Discord. Though, as I said, you can also learn from some of these mistakes and do better in other job searching areas.
