We are excited to release our eight new Base Materials in Client Beta today! You can use those new base materials on your parts and meshes as-is or customize them by creating Material Variants!
On Roblox, as many of you know, materials describe both the appearance of objects and their physical properties. Therefore, each of these new base materials introduce corresponding physical behaviors. You can change their appearance and physical properties by creating Material Variants.
While these materials are now available in production, they are still considered in beta and they might be modified or rolled back. We are planning a short Client Beta of a couple weeks before full release, assuming no issues are surfaced.
How to use the new Base Materials
You can find the new materials in MaterialManager > Material Picker, or under a part’s properties. You can simply assign them to a part or a MeshPart of your choice. Find all details in the Material documentation.
How to customize the new Base Materials
You can customize the physical properties or the appearance of the new base materials as usual, by creating Material Variants. Learn more about Material Variants here.

Many thanks to our Art and Engine teams for bringing the new materials to Client Beta!
Let us know what cool things you have been able to create with the new materials!
If you face any issues with them, please let us know in this thread.
What does Client Beta mean in this case? Are they safe to use in production for builds, and if they get rolled back what is the fallback material? If the fallback material has different physical properties it’ll be a bit unfortunate as if physics mechanisms get changed to use the new materials the behaviour of them can change at any time.
We are not expecting to roll these back at this time unless we have a very major issue happening. We are releasing through a Client Beta just in case there’s anything we need to change on the materials, but rollback is very unlikely. There would be a default material used instead if rollback was to happen.
Horay! glad to have some new materials to work with. Could you also consider adding an option to have both 2022 materials and pre 2022 materials at the same time, currently you can only have one of the opinion at a time.
Shingles and roof tiles are super valuable. It’s a real pain to find these with a suitably stylized art direction and a CC0 license. Also looking forward to slapping leather on everything lizardy.
Cool! Im assuming its just additional materials to go slong with existing materials, not like a “replacement” type of thing.
That’s great, more base materials are definitely welcome/needed, yes we can make our own, use free use ones from online, or use the material generator, but just having more with put the need to fo that is nice.
Split New materials, and future materials into material packs which would be downloadable for each game. This would allow the interfaces to be less pact due to only having the materials you need. This would also open up the option for public material packs as assets. Because currently you have to go to the model toolbox, and grab a big pack with like 100 materials, and sort through them.
