Game Development Process - Need Advice!

Hello Game Devs!

For any one of you who potentially has experience creating or working under successful ROBLOX games, I am a starting game-dev who wants to learn more about the ROBLOX game development process. Frankly, I have no idea where to begin!

From beginning to finish, how do you all begin the process of making games, from planning out a creative concept to finding developers (builders, scripters, UI artists, gfx artists).

How does each stage of the game development process pan out? I have a lot of good ideas, but I just need the right direction to start working in so I can ensure that I know how to create good ROBLOX games for the public as well!

If anyone could help me out here, I would definitely appreciate it.
Thank you all!

I usually start by finishing the hardest parts first and creating the GUI last, and then create the Icon and Thumbnail

There really is no right or wrong way to start, some people flow differently, but for me it’s something like this, It’s usually a structure like Idea first, Functionality second, Graphics & Sounds last.

  • Start with an idea, try and visualize how the gameplay looks and feels.

  • Create a prototype/outline of what that core gameplay looks like, doesn’t need to be perfect or visually pleasing, just a rough draft. So for example if it was a PVP game, I would start with the combat system.

  • Once you have something you’re happy with, begin a final draft/outline the rest of the game with mechanics, features, map, story/lore, monetization, etc. it’s not your final product, but it should resemble your final product in some way. I still wouldn’t focus too much on making it visually pleasing yet since nothing is more disappointing than a game that only looks better than it is.

  • Once your final draft is done, here is where you can actually start fleshing out your game by adding those outlined mechanics and such, Here is where i’d start to focus more on graphics and sound design.

  • If you’ve done the last 4 steps, by now you should have something that is almost a final product, this is where I would go back and refine everything that you just made, iron out any bugs or weird interactions, or add another mechanic/feature or something you came up with after your final draft.

  • Boom now your game is done.

Of course it’s not as simple and easy as 5 steps, but the general idea is just to start with a rough draft, refine it into a final draft, then refine that into a final product. I know some people like to just create everything as they go, so as I said in the beginning, there really isn’t a right or wrong way to begin, just start creating, and if you keep creating long enough, you will eventually have a game.

Got it, thank you for the help!

I see, that definitely helps. Thank you for the detailed response!

When you choose your game idea, it MUST have:

  1. A reason to stay in the game for a long time
  2. A reason for players to come back a day after
  3. A reason for players to come back a week after
  4. A reason for players to spend lots of robux ingame

If your game idea is missing any of these, just know it will NOT be pushed by the Roblox algorithm, and that is the only way your game will succeed.
