Game Entirely Stolen through downloading a copy, please suggest me what I should do!

Hello Developers!
Recently I had two people actually manipulate my game, and download a copy of it after persuading me that they were able to help me in my development. I don’t know what to do now, because I spent a lot of time on this game, and they just stole all the models and scripts like it was nothing. They can still change the formats and make the game work a different way and change all my copyright stats.
Do I lose my copyright stats if they manipulate the game in a different way?
Please suggest me what I should do in this case. Thanks!

I’ve no idea what you can do in order to fix it, however I can say that karma will come in terms of reputation for said people. If you mention their names then people looking to hire them will be more on-edge and would likely not hire them. But, for the time being I recommend talking them out of doing anything with the mentioned copy.

Did you give them team create access or did you uncopylock your game?
If you did both of those ^, then well, I don’t think Roblox can really help you with that since they’re technically (don’t quote me) allowed to get it if you did give them express permission to (via uncopylock/team create)

Though some certain things like if your decals you made or audio you made that isn’t on sale gets taken, then technically you could dmca them for that.

I did give them team create, but then I didn’t allow copying of my game.
I guess I can’t do anything about it after all then.

Yeah, you’re pretty much stuck then. Though technically you can try throwing a curve ball if they’ve taken your audio/decals with DMCA on those. (oof). (ACTUALLY, don’t quote me on that, might be wrong)

Well, that is if they changed it.

Reminder in the future, ensure that when if you do give permission to edit/change the game, make sure they’re trustworthy, or you’re absolutely fine with the chance that they get it/take it.

I didn’t publish any of the decals or audios that I produced in the game.
I guess I’m stuck after all! :joy:

Thanks for your reply, I’ll be sure about that from next time.

As long as they don’t actually use them in any way you’re fine. However, if you find them selling/reusing any part of your game contact Roblox Support asking for a DMCA takedown notice upon the assets they’re using. Generally, Roblox is pretty good about legal things like this.

As for them “changing your copyright stats”, as long as you have screenshots, videos, previous save file backups, etc. essentially anything that proves you’re the rightful owner of the game/assets will likely be enough to persuade Roblox Support into taking down/banning the users.

so they downloaded your game but do they have access to your actual game before they stole it if so i would recommend to quickly download a file of the game so they cant alter it so you over write it but if they changed it its to late

Let this be a lesson, never let anyone have access to the main place file, if they want to work for you, then that’s fine, they can do there work from a different place, if they need certain assets for there work, then only give them those assets.

I have also stated something similar to this in another topic:

They actually deleted everything in the game before downloading a copy!
However, good thing ROBLOX has a reverting to previous version system, due to which I was able to get it back.
But, anyways, thank you for all your help!

This is an issue. I would have thought that restricting the ability to publish/download the entire game would have been the FIRST consideration when designing Team Create. It does affect developer’s confidence in giving third parties edit access to games. A game with hundreds of hours of work can simply be downloaded in less than a minute…

The nearest solution I can find is to create partial copies of areas of the game for third parties, and publish them to a separate game. Developments can then be integrated into the main game. It’s a lot of extra work in some cases, and is more difficult for designers to work properly, but it does afford a reasonable level of security.

Does Roblox have any plans to remedy this in the future?

Sadly, you won’t get through with a DMCA, as it wasn’t stolen with exploits, you gave a malicious developer access to your game.

In the future, never let someone convince you to let them help. Always hire someone, and then check things like portfolio reviews, ETC.

Yeah, I agree about this.
Well, I do know it is my mistake that I had given them access to the game, but there’s nothing to do now :]

Sorry to revive this post, but my team has been having an issue with this and we have no idea who’s doing this. We’d like to have abilities like an audit log that allows us to know who accesses the game and their actions included. (ex. downloading the map, deleting instances, copying a large number of parts and pasting them to a different studio, etc.)
