Many developers see an issue with the thumbs up and thumbs down rating system. It’s very indecisive and sometimes, not accurate whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good system, but has many flaws and can definitely be better
This is why the rating function should be more firm:
-
The slightest decrease in like to dislike ratio tends to demotivate and put down many developers.
-
Dislike botting generally is the main cause of a general tendency for REAL players to dislike the game, vice versa.
-
Disliking just for the sake of other people really impacts your chances on top rating, for instance, I released my game and the first person that joined was an ex-developer who decided to dislike the game for the sake of it, it’s really hard to build up the rating from the ground up once a dislike is given SO early.
-
Whichever way your game is being rated; disliked or liked; it tends to continue on that path. This can effect both games with small and large audiences, and it’s not healthy for games which are monetized and are aiming for business success and not for the sentimental value.
With a more elaborate and decisive rating system, developers are able to:
-
Improve the functionality of their games, and take into account other people’s opinions without going offsite onto Twitter etc.
- A large portion of large games’ audiences’ are kids, and their imaginations would be much wider than an adult or a teenager, this would all in all, help bigger games become more innovative rather than 100+ games spanning in the same genre, or help branch out into other genres too.
-
Receive constructive feedback rather than a vague dislike which could keep spanning over the course of time, regardless it be for a legitimate reason or not.
In my opinion, I’d consider implementing a feature like this; it’d solve a lot of issues with low-rated games on the front page which are actually pretty good. Furthermore it means that there’ll be more creations which the community are looking for.
edit: typed this up and nothing similar came up, then i saw that amazeman made a thread regarding something similar to this.
