Game Stolen By "Investor"

Some guy stole my game and then paid people to remake it. He says I don’t own any of the intellectual property because everything got remade, but I feel backstabbed because he was an investor that I gave edit permissions to, but removed because a deal didn’t end up working out. He then downloaded my game and then paid people to adjust the code and UI.

For example, this is the UI he paid to remake, the original and new are beside eachother.

He pressured me into taking a deal to only keep 15%.
He says that if I try to DMCA him it won’t work because he has good lawyers.
I asked for 20%-25%

What should I do? Would a DMCA work in this scenario? Assuming he recoded everything?

EDIT:
The reason why I am very concerned that he’ll get away with this is because of his resources.

This is his username and the account I gave access to.

i’m gonna be honest bro… That guy 100% does not have lawyers, he’s just a lowly scammer. And on top of that he’s probably not even old enough to have lawyers

maybe don’t give access to your games to investors. How much did he steal, was it the whole game or just the UI, cause from the screen shots it looks like he just stole the UI

(sorry i cant be of much help, so hopefully this message boost your post and finds someone that knows what to do :+1:)

Every time someone DMs me about those “offers” I ignore them, I don’t trust anyone in this platform lol

this seems like an easy DMCA if you have proof and everything.

It’s an empty threat. Go tell Roblox about it. Call their bluff and file a DMCA complaint against them. What they did was theft and you can hang them for it. Depending on how much you think the game is worth, and depending on where you live, it can be a felony. I’m in California, United States. Here, if the value of the stolen property exceeds $950, that is a felony.

EDIT:

Under US copyright law, there is a legal concept known as “derivative works” which is a work based on another work. If this person is basing a game on you stolen content, then they are in violation of the law in that regard as well.

first off, dont give people edit permission unless you have them under a good secure contract, and then as for DMCA, how much of it did they remake? If everything visual was remade, I dont think theres anything you can do about it.

Exactly, I would not worry about the lawyers part. Ain’t no way this Roblox player has lawyers, or “good” lawyers.

Why would you even give edit access to an investor?

before reading the post

why did you give edit access to an “Investor”

from what I remember, edit access is required to run ads for a game

isnt there a group permission to do this

Investors arent meant to run ads for your game, thats your own job (unless they are that kind of investor), most investing is just to give you money, so they get money. Theres no reason to give them edit access I feel like

From what I can tell, theres no permission aside from edit access for this (I believe theres a feature request for a seperate permission)

They probably are :man_shrugging:

By that do you mean this one in specific or that their are investors like that?

My guess is they just asked for edit permissions and they just decided to give them lol. Or something along those lines.

Both.
I’ve definitely seen investors who prefer to run ads themselves, and for many reasons.
Some might not trust the investee (what do you even call the person receiving the money) to give them the funds directly, and some might not trust them to be familiar enough with advertising games.

Even ignoring this, I wouldn’t find it too unreasonable for an investor to want to take a look at the internals of a game. (Then again, I haven’t really invested or got invested personally, so I wouldn’t know lol)

Rip man thats why you got to build a relationship slowly between you and the investor if they are a complete stranger.

This is a very good learning experience all in all. And one that should be fixable as it’s clearly stealing so with that I would proceed with letting Roblox do its thing and get his “lawyers” if he can. But what to learn from this? Never trust someone you don’t know personally to ever have access to your game editing wise. Yeah some people like to say well what if I need help…. Then learning is better than risking it. You can also have people type code outside of Roblox for example and then integrate that into your game. That way you can have scripting help, but also keep the privacy of your game intact. Yeah you’ll have to learn how to integrate things but that’s what Udemy and/or YouTube are for. But even then read through it to make sure it doesn’t have some kind of trojan horse or whatever. For ui all you need is for them to send you over the picture and you do the rest. No need to give someone access to that either. Models… have someone make a model outside of your game and then you can add it inside when they send you the part files. Unless you’re in a team from the beginning no one else in my opinion should ever have access to your game.
