Game style decision

Should I have my game be a realistic (eg. a showcase game) or your average low poly style (eg. The wild west)?
I’m a solo developer and making stuff realistic would take much longer but in the end (possibly) make it better, but doing it low poly I have a higher chance of it ending up looking much nicer, which should I choose?

edit: the game is about the outside (wow amazing?!?!?!)

I think you should choose, not others, because you that know how you want to others feel about your game, if you want to others feel realism or not.

But just to warn you, I don’t recommend a lot a realistic game, Roblox isn’t optimized so it could lag a lot for players with old computers or with mobile, but you that choose.

Okay thanks, I’ll think I’ll go low poly style so I have a chance at completing the game.

I recommend using a realistic style. Of course, this might cause some performance issues, but that is what graphics quality is for. The problem with low-poly is that it burns my eyes from looking at a completely white screen with nothing but SmoothPlastic. If you want a realistic style with good performance, turn off 2022 materials.

Personally, I prefer unrealistic graphics in games, because ultimately, people play games to escape reality. Creating a reality that looks like what we live in doesn’t feel as immersive or beautiful, because it looks like a copy of what I live in. I do think you should choose, as rtvr mentioned, but I thought this could be helpful in making that decision.

Cheers!

Just wanted to say that low poly doesn’t mean smooth plastic. That’s a style.

It’s not going to be your average eye burning color correction 1 saturation 1 brightness 20 game lol, low poly looks great (even smooth plastic) if its done right a good example is the wild west or dragon blade.

You do know even the most “ realistic high definition” models are low poly… right? Modelers bake details into the model to give the illusion that it’s high poly but really it’s low poly.

If your models are high poly aka realistic and unoptimized then it’s a problem. If your game is laggy af and have performance issues then it’s a problem. What’s the point of making a game you can’t even play?

I was not referring to the triangle count, but rather the style. I don’t prefer the autosmooth to be disabled.
