Getting game ready for first real release, marketing strategy?

I’ve been making games on Roblox for a long time now, but I’ve never finished a project successfully.

I have a feeling things are finally going to be different as I’m finishing up my new game. It’s inspired by Autochess/Teamfight Tactics, and almost all of the game is complete, at least to an alpha-level of completeness. I’m happy to post screenshots if anyone’s interested

However, I’m very nervous about releasing the game. Since I’ve been working on it for so long (more than six months now), I’m afraid that if it fails, it’s a ton of lost time. Additionally, I don’t have a great idea of how I’m going to promote it. Since it requires a number of concurrent players to start a match, the initial players might be left alone and quit before enough people join to start a match.

Does anyone who has released games that require a “critical mass” to take off have any marketing or psychological tips for me? Thanks a lot!

Only advice I can give, is to show it on here first for some critical advice.

im no marketing expert nor have i released a game (so obviously dont trust what i say here)

but if you're willing to ignore that

so assuming you’ve done the testing and like how the game plays currently

best strategy is to build up interest before actual release and find ways to interest players who only learned of the game after its release (you already know this).

before release you can try posting here and there parts of your game showcasing its mechanics/features and gameplay. if it looks cool players will wait for it.
the big problem is where you post and whether people will actually see it (tiktok is a trending app, influencers can get good attention)

to attract players after release your game would either have to be fun from the start or be of a similar kind of game to what the player already enjoys (think any simulator, tycoon, or roleplay being easy for new players to get into because they already play those kinds of games)
you can also try a limited time event (with limited time rewards) celebrating the release of your game (make sure it’s obvious at a moment’s glance). i think this is called “fear of missing out”.

if your game doesnt work out it’ll still be something to put on a resume.

if you’re releasing your first game i’d actually recommend making games that players can play mostly alone; it’s roblox so players still expect other players.
design a game in which players spend the beginning playing alone until they reach a minimum competitive or cooperative level. this can also distract new players while your new game waits for even more players to join the server.

there’s lots of information on the internet

You have to make sure there are no major game breaking bugs like data stores losing data. People will dislike the game fast if it is buggy

10K a day in sponsorships with a good icon makes everything goes perfectly smooth as long as if your game is not for young children.
