It’s been months since I’ve done any GFXs and I just recently hopped back into it. I made two new icons for my clothing group and I’m hoping to improve my skills before I commit to any commissions :^P
Also, what’s the kind of price that these would be worth as commissions for groups/games icons?
Group icon: Kind of minimalistic, might be a little plain?
I think these are great, especially since you haven’t made any GFXs in a while! I think the posing shows off the clothing well, which is great so you can show off the clothing for your group.
I’m not too sure about the pricing, but I think before you start commissions there are a few things you should work on.
For the first GFX, the lighting is slightly flat. The second one’s lighting is better, but it is slightly too bright in some areas. You could look into using HDRIs (if you don’t know how to use them already), they can really help with lighting, I can send you a few tutorials if you want!
The shadow in the “homestore” text in the second GFX makes it slightly clearer, but it is still hard to read, be careful with that in all your designs, make sure there is enough contrast, so the text is readable.
The posing on the second GFX is pretty good, you made really good progress!
The background is better for the second one, but I think you should start practicing with 3D backgrounds. You will need to learn how to do this for future commissions, and in my opinion it makes GFXs way more interesting, as the characters can interact with the background. It also makes lighting much easier because you don’t need to adjust the lighting to match the background image, as you can just make the lighting for both at the same time.
You should also try experimenting with props and multiple rigs, as this is also an important thing to know how to do for future commissions.
I think more practice will help as well, and the practice you do can be added to your portfolio, so potential clients can see more examples of your work.
Keep up the great work, your GFXs show lots of potential! Feel free to DM me if you want anymore advice or feedback.
My biggest critique is - why do they look as if you screenshotted them from Studio and pasted it on a google image?
If you could work on that, it would make quite a difference. And yea the person above me has already provided almost everything else you may want to work upon.
Keep working your way up!
I think I see what you mean, mostly with the first one. I’d say it’s a lack of lighting and effects. I did use some effects in the second one, although it’s probably not that noticeable! But if this stuff isn’t the cause for the “flatness” you’re describing, is there something else I should be poking around at?
Some things that might be contributing to the “flatness” of your GFXs are the background and the text. They aren’t shaded, and there’s no lighting in the GFX. Along with that, the icon is relatively monochromatic (mostly brown) so that might also add on! You’ve already improved on that in your 2nd GFX but those are usually the main causes of a “flat” GFX.
