Give Specific Reasons to Why Posts are Locked

Hope you all had a thankful thanksgiving! :turkey:

So recently I’ve seen lots of topics being locked/unlisted, and most didn’t come with a reason to why they were locked. Yes, typically the reason why topics are locked is pretty self explanatory, but for some posts, a reason would be much better than just a “Post was locked and unlisted” statement. Of course it’s possible to inform why the topic was locked. (I’ve seen some cases of this, but couldn’t find and take a snippet.).

This is the problem I’m essentially talking about:

(Another example below)

About 90% of the topics I see locked and unlisted are like this and don’t provide any reason.

Yes, sometimes I do see reasons listed in why the topic was closed, but please give more detail and possibly tips to consider in the future. I’ve never seen a topic locked statement that provided specifically clear and helpful reason/tips instead of a bland statement like “Not related to development”. Yes, that statement is much more useful than no statement, but can still be more specific and include reasons/tips. Just locking a topic without giving a reason, how will the creator know why their topic got locked or what to consider in the future?

I AM NOT TRYING TO TARGET AND BLAME THE MODERATORS WHO LOCKED WITHOUT GIVING A REASON, but just saying that the above would really be something to consider and a habit to start doing.

The authors of the topic get a message with more information, so this is moot.

I think this is for a few reasons:

  1. As you said, usually self-explanatory.
  2. As @buildthomas said, only the author really needs to know that information.
  3. Because the threads are unlisted, they do not show up in sorts, and therefore it would be a waste of time to put detailed feedback there because very few people see it.

If you are the author of a thread that is locked and unlisted and are confused as to why it was closed, you should reach out to this group for more info:

Oh, my! What was my brain thinking when I was writing this thread…
Well, I guess detailed feedback isn’t necessary then, but at least something other than Post was Locked would still be better. I do sometimes visit old posts, and sometimes in the midst of typing something, the topic will get locked. Sometimes I also see others who are typing and then the post gets locked, or I/they haven’t left the post yet, so we are still able to see any feedback given or why the post was locked. So I guess something like “Not related to development” could still work. (I mean, it’s just a few words, and probably won’t so much time, unless the moderator is in a hassle or in a rush.)

Well, it could be useful for readers and users who haven’t exited the topic yet, or are still typing. It could give them at least some information for what to look for when creating future topics.

Other than that, you both were right about not needing to give detailed information. I guess I’ll end the topic here since I don’t have anything other to say, have a great day!
