Good game concept?

Hello, I am going to be starting a new game and I just wanted to know if it is a good concept and has the potential to be somewhere on the front page.

Basics

Basically, players will spawn into a randomly chosen map which vary in environments (desert, countryside, mountainous, snow etc) where they will have to fight a giant boss, which is chosen randomly as there will be many, and they will get points for killing it depending on it’s difficulty level. The points can be spent on new weapons, hats and other cosmetics that I may decide to add in the future.

I didn’t want to give you all the info since people may copy the game so this is all I will say, but that’s really it. Obviously there’s a lot more I want to add.

I tried searching for games like it but couldn’t find any so if you know any please tell me so I can try and make it as different to theirs as possible.

I’m not a front page developer, but the best advice I can think of is to always improve. Add more details to your builds. Add more design to your UIs (don’t go overboard). Always improve code, even backend coding. Make sure your updates are on a schedule and your updates get a positive reaction by your fanbase. You always want to make sure that your game is taking small steps forward, not a large step backwards.

Hi WhatZit,

I can’t help but think that if the game was centred around the defeating of ‘giant’ bosses, and every round was designed in this congruent manner, that gameplay would become boring and monotonous. In addition, the points earned from defeating the boss may be superfluous for the following reasons:

  • Either everybody or most people would profit from the destruction of the boss, meaning that cosmetics wouldn’t be a rarity and thus not a point of interest (i.e., not bragging rights); and
  • The points couldn’t be spent elsewhere; you make no mention of shops or any other services, and even so, if the game was completely dominated by fighting bosses, purchasing upgrades (e.g., double health) may just make the game boring as previously mentioned.

I personally believe that if you wanted to adapt your game to becoming popular, then your game would need many more themes, activities, etc. It is a truism that most unvaried games remain unpopular.

I hope this was helpful for you.

There will be many different shops where you can buy different things. Also, bosses would have different abilities for example, one might spawn zombies around it which would prove a bit of challenge to players and another may be an easy simple one that maybe tries to just smash you.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I honestly doubt people would “copy” this idea, but if you’re worried about it you may want to go private with this thread (#development-discussion). Not many on the DevForum, if at all anyone, will take your ideas without explicit permission. Though I could be wrong.

Concept worries aside, this sounds like a pretty generic concept, if I’m going to be honest with you. I know of games that operate similarly like this. Obviously they don’t have the same mannerism of killing a boss or changing maps, but they operate in relatively the same way. Take for example:

  • THE RAKE by rvvz: You run away from a monster that spawns from a cave. You don’t fight the boss, you survive it.
  • Boss Fighting Stages by SupernalNine: There’s some story to it. You go to maps, fight bosses or waves of their minions, then you progress to the next map.
  • GIANT SURVIVAL by BuildIntoGames: Spawn into a random map, fight a boss (giant).
  • Roblox Mythology | Birth of Roblox by jiyu: Old classic game. To advance to a new part of the map, you have to defeat a boss.
  • Monster Islands by TheSteelEagle: This game isn’t random, but it’s a bit like what you say. This pertains to the islands maps. You spawn into a map, destroy a portal (as well as minions and bosses) and use your spendings on enhancements or whatever.

I don’t know how you intend to expand on the idea of boss fighting (since random bosses and maps don’t make the hugest difference to the concept except for it’s variety), as you’ve chosen not to delineate on them, but it’s important to take that idea and innovate. Ask yourself many questions. How will you not make this similar to other boss fighting games? What new things do you plan to include? Things like this.

Boss fighting on a whole is a decently good concept. You have a lot you can do with it depending on how you move forward, it’s fun to fight cool enemies and you have many options you can give people. The thing is, if it’s not something new, it’ll end up being a “one-time wonder” game. It won’t last.

This is pretty similar to Book of Monsters by B_rcode

Thank you so much for this, I’ll look at some of these games and see what I can do differently from them.

So Dauntless but randomised? Could be an interesting concept if executed right, however I’m unsure if the majority of young players on Roblox would enjoy that type of game.

Yes, but if players like natural disaster survival then they will probably like this game as you will have to survive while a giant boss is tearing down a town or whatever

Do they have to defeat it or just survive? And yeah sounds fine I guess.

Defeat it within a time limit = Good amount of points to spend

Survive = fair amount of points but definitely a bit lower than defeating the boss

Also, you earn points depending on how much damage you do to the boss. This is so that if your team is incompetent, you can still be rewarded for your skill.
