Hello there. I have a question for you all, this being Grid-based combat and how I can keep battles fresh. I have gone through a bit of brainstorming about things that could influence the “Freshness” of this kind of battle system.
Before I begin, however, I should probably explain what I mean by “Grid-Based Combat.” (I’ll refer to this as GBA.) GBA is the idea of having entities move around on a grid, is limited based on the tiles that they can move each turn. Think of Fire Emblem or Hexaria. Hopefully, now that you have a general idea, I can explain what I have brainstormed.
Negative Factors
- Having grid-based combat could feel boring after playing through it for a long time.
- It can be rather slow in terms of flow.
- The player could essentially employ the same strategy over and over to ensure victory.
- A map could either be too big or too small, affecting the player’s playstyle negatively.
Of course, there are some advantages as well, such as having access to more mechanics which could make the game more interesting and in return, fun. However, I feel as if GBA games simply get dry too fast and outweighs the positive side effects of these games. People generally don’t like grinding, nor do they like games that are just simply too repetitive.
- It gets too dry too fast.
- I think GBA games are okay.
- I have not played enough GBA games to respond accurately.
- I think GBA games could be a thrill given the proper game design.Note that this applies to ALL games.
