Group Role names in Cyrillic are not approved

Reproduction steps:

  1. Own a group

  2. Go to “Roles” while configuring the group

  3. Try to create and/or change the role’s name using Cyrillic letters

Using Latin letters: “test”

Using Cyrillic letters: “тест”

I’d like to inform you that exactly the same thing happens when you try to edit an existing role. If this problem occurs in Cyrillic, it probably means that other alphabets in other languages might have the same issue.

Expected behavior:

I have no problems with creating Role names in Cyrillic

Actual behavior:

I can’t either create roles in Cyrillic or edit already existing roles without rewriting their name in English

Adding in a bit here but I’ve been experiencing this issue for years. It seems that when updating roles, any non-standard ASCII characters are completely stripped from the string and are effectively null characters, meaning that a rank with purely these characters is submitted as blank. Adding some kind of standard character allowed me to sidestep the problem (e.g. starting a rank with [:]). Though that’s not the result I want.

I’ve done some investigation regarding this issue and discovered something:

Your method of going around this issue actually works, but I don’t want to add any unnecessary characters either. The fun fact is I’ve never experienced this issue before. I successfully created all the roles I needed like two or so months ago, but now it’s impossible.

And now I’m starting to believe that there won’t be any fix as you were having exactly the same issue for quite a few years now.

Hello @Xannedo! We’ve fixed a part of the issue that was preventing any non-ascii role names from being created. We are still investigating an issue preventing multiple non-ascii role names from being created without any ascii characters and will get back to you shortly once that’s resolved.

Hello, be aware that this issue also appears when you try to edit your group’s “About” section if it’s written in Russian. I fail to reproduce all these issues on some of my other groups.
I no more experience any issues neither with editing/creating roles nor editing the “About” section.

Thanks for responding.

Hello @Xannedo / @colbert2677, we’ve applied a fix that should solve the issue you are describing. Are you able to confirm it’s working as expected now?

Hey, gameon. I’m unable to check that right now. I’ll let you know if there are any issues.

Hey, thank you for the follow up and sorry for the late response. I’ve just checked and I am able to now create ranks with purely non-ASCII characters (simulated bold text) without them being rejected. From my end, it’s working as expected - appreciate the update!
