High Iron - Overview

A statement on development progress.

High Iron’s last major update released in March 2025, followed by three small content updates leading up to August. Since then, we have been working on the next big update, though at the moment there is very little news to share.

It will contain a very large map expansion, reworks for existing areas, a new main menu and in-game user interface with an original soundtrack, the contract and currency system (see below), tons of new trains, as well an improved version of the drive system with new features.

This update is our largest ever and is the key to getting the game closer to the open beta stage. We have a lot of faith in this project and we want High Iron to be the best it can be, and we will take as much time as we need to make this happen. We promise that it will be worth the wait!

Overview

High Iron is a full-scale, realistic train simulator with virtually no limitations! Set in North America during the 20th century, it features a variety of unique trains from time periods throughout history.

Train Spawning

Locomotives

Locomotives can be spawned via access points around the map, usually at a rail yard or roundhouse, represented by a graphic above the tracks. They are divided into categories based on their use requirements and power type, such as steam or diesel. While most locomotives are free, some can only be obtained through the currency system or other means.

Rolling Stock

Rolling stock is spawned similarly to locomotives, but with one key difference: Railcars can be spawned in any possible arrangement! Like locomotives, they are also divided into categories based on use requirements and application, such as passenger or freight. Only railcars with the same coupler type are able to connect, so keep that in mind when creating your consist!

Contracts and Currency

Spikes

Spikes are the game’s virtual currency and are used to purchase new equipment. They can mainly be earned either by completing contracts or servicing industries in free roam with trains that you own, but can also be obtained through occasional paychecks or side quests.

Contracts

Contracts are the primary way to earn Spikes during your time playing High Iron. They will be divided into categories based on their difficulty, being displayed with a one to five star system. The more stars a contract has, the more challenging it will be. Completing any given contract will give you a set amount of Spikes and XP depending on difficulty.

β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜† - Switching Jobs
β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜† - Local Runs
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜† - Long Distance Freight
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† - Long Distance Passenger
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… - Commuter Runs

Higher difficulty contracts will feature unique conditions that make them more demanding, but you will be rewarded handsomely if you manage to complete one. You may have to stick to a timetable and make it to your destination under a time limit or treat your consist with the utmost care.

There will also be bonuses if you do well during any contract, regardless of difficulty! Sounding your horn at crossings or having high stop accuracy will earn you extra Spikes and XP.

Golden Spikes

Golden Spikes are an exclusive, high-end version of the currency that can only be obtained by leveling up with enough XP or by participating in events. They are used to unlock more unique trains, such as experimental locomotives or popular train sets. Golden Spikes can not be bought with Robux, unlike the normal Spikes, which will have optional packages for even faster progression. This is not necessary, however, as it will be relatively easy for anyone to unlock new trains!

Maps

High Iron does not take place on a single map, but rather it is split into several routes with varying environments and layouts. Each one is based on a different location in North America and features numerous unique towns, industries, yards, and stations.

You are able to choose which map you want play on and can switch at any time, so how you experience the game is entirely up to you! As of writing, the following routes are available:

  • Red Rock - A desert route based in the southwestern United States with some inspiration from northeastern Mexico. There are an abundance of sand dunes and dry mountains here.
  • Testing Layout - A simple, oval-shaped track surrounded by green hills and trees. With no basis in mind, it was created during early development to experiment with trains and features.
