Are they unions? Pretty sure you can cut the overlapping parts.

I think this will work:
Rotate the negate part by:
(p1 rotation + p2 rotation)/2
OR
use 2 cylinder negates that fits the dome or indent or whatever, and negate the parts
Two solutions I would have for this would be to either use wedges or the plugin Archimedes.
Archimedes would give the same result.
how would a make a union the size of the thing I need to destroy
get a cylinder, select it only, union it, and then you can stretch the cylinder out
