How can I improve this sword slashing animation?

I’m trying to make a sword for my game, and today I tried making animations for it. It’s nothing special, but I’m looking for ways that I can improve it so that I can use this post for future reference!

It was hard to find any references, so I made it from scratch. The legs and torso don’t need to be animated btw.

Hello StarJ3M, I’ve made some melee animations myself and I would suggest you move the slash higher. Otherwise, you’ll have people fighting each other’s legs like this is Tarkov. You could also make the attack start higher, so you’ve got an overhead cross swing.

Is this Better?

That’s way better! :+1:

It’s still a little weird tho, because usually we swing weapons from above to make use of gravity, so the fact that the swords comes from slightly below it’s weird

Not saying it’s bad tho, I’ve seen in some animes where sword users do that :sob:

What about this for the first frame?

A solid height and slash, looks good. Now consider making it an overhead slash, moving in an arc. See videos of swordfighting for references. The starting frame is fine, just make sure it ends low and doesn’t become horizontal at the end.

Then, check in-game and see if that animation works in practice.

Where did you find this reference gif? I’ve been having a hard time trying to find reference images / videos for animations…

Something like this?

You should just go ahead and use what you have, you can always improve it later. If it looks good in-game, then it is. No need to wait for everyone’s stamp of approval.

Literally just searched in google “Sword swing from below” and sorted by gifs and i got it

guess I’m not to specific with my wording because I couldn’t find any real sword attacks for reference…
