How can I make a map feel more full/lively?

Hello! I’m currently building a map for my game!

I’ve made the map layout, and all of the important buildings, but I’m kind of confused on how to fill up spots like this:

I’ve tried adding crates, mushrooms, etc. but it still looks like its missing something:

So, does anyone have any random ideas for items I could use to make my game feel more full or lively? (I’ve tried adding windshake, particles, etc. and it’s definitely helped)

I would add some floral life into this environment.

A moderate amount of flowers and patches of grass might add some character to it.

You could also add some tinier rock variants (like pebbles) similar to this.

Hope this helps.

The biggest lessons I learned about realistic environments is that terrain is the focus

I’ve tried to make several things in the past, threw down a few parts and called it the base. Even if I built an empire so grand upon it, ultimately players will look down, see a 50x50 part below them, and the buildings above crumble from the weakness of the base. You cannot build a skyscraper without a strong foundation.

All of the part terrain I’ve ever made typically gets a small overlay like this:

Or I’ll give it some added objects like trees to cover the area.

Add more terrain differences, whether it be slopes, small hills, even random dirt or tall grass patches. Things that make the terrain have volume

Typically, the ground of a build has no “volume” to it. Consider it as a 2D plane. when you give a plane a third dimension, in this case the examples I described above, it makes the player feel like they aren’t just standing on a part, they’re standing on a part with fashion.

Here are some before/afters of an island scene I’m making:

And finally, it has now evolved as far as this!

You’ll notice how even if it looked good before, small changes can really give a lot of added flavor.
