Context
Yo! Hqzam here. So I’m working on a multiplayer Tower Defense game, but the projectiles shot from your towers can damage you as well, so It’s also a Bullet Hell! However when testing out the second map, “New Neotropolis”, it doesn’t feel that different to the first, which is just your standard linear path, with basic enemies. What I want to know is what I could implement to have this map be more fun, and give it a more unique gameplay experience than the other maps without relying on just visuals, and unique enemies.
How Have I Tried to Resolve The Issue?
What I have done to fix this, is I added in teleporters, that would transport enemies down a different section of path where the second teleporter is located. Problem is though, this ended up being more irritating, and tedious to have to deal with than fun. The second thing I have tried, which you can see in the screenshot below, was add in cannons that would work like the towers, but are fixated onto the corners of the map. After testing I can’t say I enjoyed gameplay with these cannons, but I can’t say I really hated it either.
Conclusion
So what do you think? Would these cannons be a good addition, with some changes done, or can I do something else? If so please do tell, and if you have any feedback, or suggestions regarding the map itself, I’d love to hear em as well!
(The images in the levitating screens are temporary, and will be replaced on release)
The dark purple stones are the path right? If it is, you could maybe try add some more decorations on the outside.
Maybe add a neon border around the path, or add decorations on the map itself(not outside, but on the middle square).
Love the neon border idea! However the reason there isn’t much detail on the inner part of the map, is because it would take up space for the towers, and in a game where you need to have as much space as possible (especially since this is also a bullet hell), it wouldn’t be a good idea to limit said space purely for visuals
Here’s how a map would look with towers being placed:
The first on is fantasy or grassland the second one is cyberpunk.
There’s definitely some sort of difference between the city one and grass one. When I look at grass one, it looks nice and fun but city one seems just plain.
Let’s compare
Grassland:
-Irregular borders
-Ground decorations
City:
-Square
-Plain ground
I’m not sure if this will help but maybe instead of making it just flat square try making it more interesting. Maybe add some sort of street in the middle? How about some sort of bridge?
Thanks for the suggestion! And playing the map for a bit, yeah I can see where you coming from here. So I’ll definitely look into making the shape of the map more unique, thanks!
