So, i’m currently working on an obby game and i’m not sure if i made it too difficult, as i heard that players don’t love games that are pretty hard, like, I dont wanna my game to flop just because people will not play it as it’s too hard to beat. I just want an idea, should I make a casual obby game that is very easy for most players to beat or should i make it more challenging with some more complex stages? (By challenging and complex stages i meant stages that require some tries to beat).
1
no effort needed
2 to 50
easy
51 to 299
hard
300 to 776
almost impossible
777
impossible
778
just a wall that tells ‘work in progress’
thank you, I want to make around 500 stages so this is very helpful
What does this mean? I’m not really sure how it helps superbos88.
Oh nevermind, it’s about obby stages
Your obby game’s difficulty should gradually increase with each stage (do this by making more complex obstacles, in more creative ways). The key to making sure player’s don’t rage quit is forgiving the player. Make sure to add frequent checkpoints. Always. If you have a stage with a pretty hard obstacle, but is pretty short, it probably isn’t. Add a checkpoint before and after so players don’t have to redo the obstacle all over again if they die later in the same stage. Many obby games overlook this and it’s what gets their game dislikes. The stage will be just as hard with checkpoints as it is without, so no worries about it lowering the difficulty.
Also just a designing tip, when you introduce a new obstacle, make sure you just have that type of obstacle alone for the first time it’s used so players can understand it better. If you’re using conveyors for the first time, have the stage just have conveyors, then add some killbricks onto them later. That’ll let the players know what to do while still giving them a challenge.
thank you for your idea dude, i’m trying to add a lot of checkpoints and make each stage as unique as possible so there won’t be repetitive obstacles, anyways i think i’ll raise the difficulty at every 10 stages so it will be more balanced
I don’t make obbies and haven’t played in a while, BUT; Something that annoyed me the last time I played was on hard stages where I died a lot, I had to wait almost ten seconds sometimes to fall down, die, respawn, etc. It would be nice if maybe there was an invisible part right below the course that teleported you instantly back to the most recent checkpoint. Maybe just to make it seem more frictionless? I don’t know. It could just kill you without waiting so long to fall. Use your own judgement however
