My question is, how do you builders avoid getting scammed?
When I ask that question, people tell me that they make the person give them a down payment, but even if they give you one, can’t they just scam you and they only gave you that small payment? (If that make sense)
Do you guys just build in your own place, then transfer the ownership of the place (if possible) to your Customer?
You can add require scripts if you are working in their baseplate but, I would alwaya recommend work on yours make a game so they check it out then when they pay you give them there model if its a game then publish it to there group. Then i wont see any problem.
I follow this steps to avoid getting scammed:
First of all, just send screenshots and let the other user play your game, never give access to studio.
When half of the work is done, recieve a small amount of robux, maybe 5% of all the payment ( 5% seems to be nothing, but if you are working for 100K Robux, you get 5k robux), of course % is negotiable.
If the user you are working for, doesnt like this method, then.
Wait until the asset/map/model/etc is finished, then save a local copy of your place, before you export your place to the user, ask for a %, (negotiable too, I recommend from 50-80%), when you recieve the Robux amount, export the user the place, then you will ask for the other %.
If you dont get the remaining payment, you wont lose everything, because you recieved a % of the total payment.
Of course, dont forget to report the scammer to Roblox staff.
Thx for reading, nice day!
This works, however, you can finish the build and they can still refuse to pay you. Essentially wasting your time, for large projects, this is a great flaw.
If you plan on using this, I would just “Publish as…” to their group page. Making everything into a model takes longer and is less efficient for your time as a builder.
Alternatively, just make them pay you, in full, prior to you beginning the commission.
I would never accept group payouts percentage as payment, inexperienced tweens are usually designing these games: setting them up for failure. Always try and go for Group Funds or PayPal or another alternative. Never in limiteds or Roblox Giftcards or anything like that.
As someone who deals with online transactions quite a bit both on and off Roblox, I suggest you have your buyer pay you a non-refundable down payment. The amount is up to you although I typically do 50% on commission work. You have to keep in mind that they’re not just paying for your work but they’re also paying you for your time put into your work. This helps prevent you investing your time and being left empty handed in the end.
Once you’ve completed your project, make sure you receive the other percentage owed to you before sending off the finished project. Keep in mind, money can be refunded, the product cannot. This goes for Roblox, PayPal, etc.
The best recommendation I could give you would be to figure out who’s hiring you for the job and make an evaluation based on that. For example, if it’s a professional with experience and a track record with a team and a history of paying, you’ve unlikely got anything to worry about and I would suggest just communicating along the way to make sure what you’re building is what they are expecting.
The odds of getting scammed in a scenario like this are very slim.
If however, it’s a young and inexperienced builder with lofty dreams that is going to pay you very well when the game is successful, I wouldn’t count on that.
Alternatively, if you’re working for money instead of Robux there are 3rd party services such as Fiverr and Upwork that you can use. Those services act as a middle man and make the buyer pay upfront and ensure a reasonable delivery. If you deliver as you promised and the seller tries to refuse to pay the odds are the agent will rule in your favor and pay you.
The downside to this is they take a percentage from the buyer and the seller, sometimes as much as 20% from each depending on the size of the job so everyone either makes less/pays more but at least both parties are safe.
If you’re working for Robux just be selective and make sure you are very comfortable that the person you’re dealing with will pay you. There’s no universal answer any other way.
As a buyer myself often hiring builders I’ve literally paid people and had them block me 5 seconds later so I can tell you the odds of me paying anyone Robux in advance are slim to none. At the same time, I can tell you a buyer who is honest will try to work with you and find a way everyone is covered.
Just be honest, keep to your word, get references and build a solid portfolio. Only deal with developers you trust and you’re probably okay.
Edit: I just wanted to add to this that as I’ve been taking some building and modeling jobs myself, Synapse is a real thing, as well as others like it. Both when hiring a builder as well as working as one, my rules are pretty simple. I will show you the job, get your approval, and ensure you are happy with the work before I take payment, however, payment should be made before the job is turned in when dealing with any new people I don’t have a history with.
To ensure a safe way to show the place, but at the same time not risk them stealing it, I would suggest only opening the place to explore on Mobile, Tablet, or Console (Not PC). This way you can allow them to explore, look around, and see the place for themselves, without the risk of it being stolen.
I do not expect someone would go through the extent of building a place for someone else, only to take payment and run. Sure, it’s possible, but if you pay attention to the person you’re dealing with I don’t think it is a risk worth worrying about.
Just a note for future builders that read this and want a good way to establish a new relationship.
If someone demands delivery upfront or in the reverse, a builder demands something like half payment upfront, I personally would not take the risk, find someone else to work with. I do not find that reputable people make unfair demands so those who do cause great skepticism.
I would just wait for the person to pay me, then I would give the place to him/her. Pretty simple in my opinion. Works, since you can make sure you got payed and you instantly give it to them. Just, please, don’t scam the person that hired you this way, please.
