How do I achieve rim-lighting in GFX?

Hey there! I’m Munir, a GFX Artist, after looking at other people’s portfolios to improve my work, I stumbled upon a cool looking effect, here are some examples:image
Here’s the artist: Jer7ys | 3D Artist (CLOSED)

So what did I try to do? First of all, I cut the character from the background then painted with a square brush where I wanted it to be, didn’t really worked out, after that, I tried using the pen tool which seems to be that, it worked but not really like the effect I tried to achieve.

So if anyone has a way, please tell me! Thanks a ton and have a great Sunday!

you can just duplicate the render of the character then in photoshop turn the fill to 0 and add a inner glow, bevel, and outer glow or just stroke and outer glow, then just mask it out

Hi! For this particular GFX, I used the pen tool in Photoshop. I used it to trace over edges and used the “Stroke Path” command with “Simulate Pressure” checked on. For me, I used the normal hard circle brush and sized it down to about 6 pixels (That really depends on the resolution of your canvas). Hope this helps!

Also, make sure you turn on outer glow. This can be done through opening the layer styles.
