How do I avoid copyright issues with a LoZ inspired boss battle?

As a new developer, I want to try practicing my programming skills by doing small games. I have an idea by trying my hand at making a boss battle, the boss being The Happy Mask Salesman from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The issue is, as you probably guessed, copyright. I don’t think it’s too big of an issue, since all that really needs to be done is a name change. When he appears in game, I intend him to look much different than he does in the Legend of Zelda games. But I’d rather be safe than sorry and ask you guys what else I should do to ensure that my game won’t get taken down?

(As a side note, I also intend to replace his masks of copyrighted characters, such as the Mario mask, as well.)

If the character looks different there shouldn’t be an issue. Do a re-color and maybe change one or two of the characteristics.
(I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice)
