How do i cut out something in blender?

so im making letter in blender, and im making an R at the moment but I cant seem to figure out how to cut out the oval part in the R.

You can use the knife tool. (BTW you can add text)

I tried the knife tool but no matter what button I pressed the outline just disappeared,
also I know I can use text but I’m also trying to increase my modelling ability

After you knife the section out, delete it and merge the edges

Hi you can try the boolean modifier tool, blender boolean booleans are where you can cut one shape out of another, like a cookie cutter, there is loads of tutorials on youtube just search ‘blender 2.8 boolean’
