How do I know if something has more tris than it should has?

After a few building projects, I have learnt that I should be taking measures to optimize my build from the beginning to reduce lag. However, because of this, I found myself overthinking the tris count of every single part that I have been modeling so far.

Here’s an example of something I’ve been struggling on for a while:

I really can’t decide if 5.2K tris is good for railings or not. Excluding the glass panels, the frame accounts for 4.8K tris. While I’m cannot share the full progress, they are part of a building that’s around 20K tris. There will be another 2-3 buildings that will be built down to details like this since they are pretty much the center of attention, and they will all be placed in the same area.

So, bearing that in mind, here are my questions:

  1. How do you estimate a reasonable tris count for a model?
  2. How many tris is too much for a game?
  3. Could my railings have been better optimized? (besides decimating)

Help is still very much appreciated! (im so indecisive i cant move on :pensive:)

Hey there,
I’d say in estimating a reasonable tris count would be in building in good detail, but using the decimate in the end and making a few adjustments in the end to the model.
The tris limit in importing is 10k, but usually it depends on a game. Mobile games have a lower tris limit while PC game could have a higher one. Depends what game you are working on.
I’d say for the optimizing part of the railings, they are looking just fine, not too many or too few.

Keep up the work!
